Hi all,
Well here is the start of my first build. My plan is doing a sunburst Tele.
So far, I have done a mock build, sanded from 180. 220, 320 and some steel wool and wiped down with alcohol.
Then I sprayed a vinyl sealer let dry for 24 hours, lightly sanded with 320 and sprayed another coat of vinyl sealer. That's where I am now. Tomorrow, I will lightly sand with 320 and start paint.
I am doing a sunburst with encore brown and star-cast amber. Should I not worry to much with the sides using the star-cast amber since it will be brown? Also, do I need to use a sealer after the amber spray? If so, do I use the vinyl sealer or the string instrument lacquer?
I look forward to hearing from you guys and if you have any tips or tricks, please chime in.
I look forward to sharing this project with you all... 8-)

great start Jason, always good to see another kit get off the ground
-
Here is the front of the body. It is still a little wet. I haven't bursted the back yet. First time. I can live with it. :)
What is that whiteish hue that is around the brown? See it? Will it buff out?
Thanks guys..

I believe this is 'blushing', caused by moisture. If anything I think buffing will make it worse. Jarrod would be the guy with the pro opinion, but it might be a case of sand off and start again. :(

I got it taken care of. A little denatured alcohol did the trick..

I got one more coat of clear lacquer to do, then dry and cure, wet sand, poliah and assemble..

nice tobacco burst Jason, glad you got the blushing sorted

Awesome burst. Great job.

Looks awesome Jason! How did you apply the burst? Don't know much about the process, so trying to get a good idea of how successful ones have been done haha.

Thanks guys.. I am really pleased. I will be putting it together is a few days. Will post more photos..
Mike, what I did was sand really good, spray a vinyl sealer let dry then wet sand lightly.
Then I sprayed the front and back with starcast amber. Then just sprayed the burst with encore brown by hand, no template to cover the front or back. Just sprayed most of the spray off the guitar letting a little hit the body. The youtube link I have listed is exactly how I did it. Have a look at it.
This was the first guitar I have ever done and really the only time I have ever worked with spraying wood. Give this video a look and watch from the beginning of the series. I followed this plan.
Thanks again and have fun..

I like the side-bursts he shows. I know it would be a ticket to the naughty shed, but I do want to try that one day.
-
Got the pickups wired up and installed as well as the control plate. I will be attaching the neck tomorrow..

Thanks so much guys. I am really looking forward to my next build.
I will snap some pix's of this soon for the comp..

I figured I would upload the finished Tele. It has cured for a month or so and has been set up. It sounds great. I have been building a 60's Jazz bass that I will post in a new build diary. I was pleasantly surprised with my sunburst finish. This was my first build.
