So, i had a heap of off cuts and spare bits of tree hanging around...
What to do with them?
Build a homage to the Rickenbacker 4001, of course!

Next time i will clamp the body and neck the right way round :P
Cool DB. Looks great. Can you get genuine parts ?
Thanx Woks.
This one will have a Schaller roller bridge and a set of Tonerider Jazzies on board with just a volume control.. just to be different :)
Next time I go to my timber yard I will get me some Tassie Blackwood and build a proper neck through.
I have a good mate in the States that is happy to get me genuine pups and hardware for the next one.
Love it DB. Looking great. Maybe pretend it's a lefty?
Brendan, you are a genius! luv ya Bro! :)
The world is a better place because of Rickies, I reckon. If you build this as a lefty DB I may have to learn how to be ambidextrous. Is there room in the PBG community for a Rickynapper?
Ricky with Jazz bass pickups, kind of like the bass Ed Roman built for Dave Meros from Spocks Beard.

Mock up with neck seated and pups and hardware in place...
Also a shot of headstock

And now with pup routs, sanded to 240....

Beautiful bit of pocketing there, DB and the rollers add a nice touch. A solid chunk of metal like that should help give some serious sustain.
Awesome build DB. Very, very jealous of this one! So wish I had the skills...
cheers,
Gav.
looking good DB, also good to see you weren't working on a dry sump !
What stain colour you got planned for this bad boy ?
Thanx Guys.
Lawry, I love the Schaller bridges... They do give a great sustain boost to any Bass or Guitar.
Gav, all you need are the right toys, err, tools and accurate templates and away ya go :)
Woks, I knew you would spot the beer... I put that in just for you Buddy ;)
A few shots of the neck and headstock... Ready for final sanding

Yet another DB masterpiece in the making.
I had to go back and look for it. I only had eyes for the bass.Quote:

What there was a beer in the photos? I only saw bass.
Hehehehe... I knew I could count on Woks to spot the beer first.. Thats one get out of the Naughty Room for free, Woks :)
looking good DB, the wood for the body is just superb
And todays frivolities in the Man Cave...
Binding, sanding, sanding and more sanding with a whole lot more sanding ahead of me.....

In between answering emails, doing a post office run and nanna nap i managed to final sand the body, finish off the neck- bone nut and inlays- and throw a few coats of stain on the body and headstock...

And lets not forget the side dots.... White plastic and Paua shell

When that pic of the body in colour came up on my screen it literally took my breath away.
So it's a fretless too ay. Careful now, you might pull me over to the darkside of the bass players with gems like this one.
Yhep, no speed humps on most of my Bass builds... Speed humps belong on Guitars, not Bass! :)
Oh man, I'm in love.
wow DB great progress since the weekend, love the shape, colour and inlays, looking forward to seeing this beast progress. Does that round edge on the top of the neck above the heel fit in with the pickguard ?
Oh and thanks for the get out of the naughty room free card, I might use that very soon !
Cheers guys,
Woks, the cresting wave shape on the fingerboard was just a flight of fancy on my behalf...
Thought it balanced out the headstock rather nicely... (Sure hope Rickenbacker don't see it and steal my idea) :)
As for the get out of the naughty room for free card, you almost needed it tonight.... Have you ever seen me put a timber hider.... Errrm... Pick guard on a build yet? :P
Suggesting a pick guard on a Dingobass build. *rip*Quote:

Hehe. Love how you think DB. I haven't played a fretted bass for years and I don't think I could ever go back.Quote:

I love the way the neck is looking, and the markers. What are you going to use on the fingerboard to toughen it up? Or am I jumping the gun too much here ;-)
Thanx Lawry,
Still undecided as to what finish to put on the fingerboard...
The Rock Maple is plenty hard enough, especially as I only use flat wound strings so I may stain and wax it.
If I don't stain I will flood it with thin superglue, this makes it hard as!
Part of me was wanting this to be an April fools - it's looking amazing - loving the surf curl at the base of the fretboard. But now I'm going to be wanting something just like it... What sort of wood is that?
The body is Fiji'Hog, Brendan..as stocked by Pit Bull ;)
oh DB, sorry for suggesting you would use a pickguard, I was assuming a Ricky 4001 bass has a pickguard but wasn't thinking straight !
Hahaha! You are forgiven Woks.
Normally the 4001 does have a p...p... you know what, so your assumption is accepted as an honest mistake :)
You can hang onto your get out of the naughty room card a while longer..
awesome thanks DB, I'll be using the card to get out next time we run out of beer in the naughty room !
Why don't you just buy a brew kit for the naughty corner? Problem solved. You may end up having to knock people back from wanting to get in.
haha great idea Lozza, your'e right it may get too busy if we got a surplus of beer, so we better keep a lid on it, pardon the pun ! If the naughty room gets expanded we may be able to set up a small micro brewery with a keg filler, save on filling bottles !
Ya reckon I could start a 'naughty' franchise in Nth Qld?
maybe Lozza, you would have to consult with the naughty master DB. You would need someone to manage the people in the naughty room and how far to the nearest Pit Bull builder to you Loz ?
