My main 4-string is in dire need of a spring clean, so I figured the "relic" look was a bit naff and will strip it back to bare wood to see if there is any grain worth highlighting.
This is it before disassembly.

Body freshly denuded. Steady.... ;)
There are a few too many dinks and dents peppered across the body that require filler, and a rather boring grain, to be worth sanding and highlighting. So this will be a spray can job.
I'm thinking a off-white/cream colour. It will compliment Jaffa quite well methinks.

@Brendan- yes keeping frets. Already have a fretless twin for this bass.

Did you use anything to help get the old nitro skin off this bass other than copious amounts of elbow grease and sandpaper?
-
Ah, it wasn't nitro but clear enamel gloss on dodgy woodstain. I scraped off the most with a Stanley knife blade or two, then hit the sand paper at full gusto.
Dents have been filled now and sanded back ready for priming. I have decided on a cream colour and have ordered a replacement red tortoiseshell pickguard. Should look The Bizness when it's done.

Sweet... PBasses are nice basses.

Opted for a can of spray called Warm Ochre. Like the result thus far.

Have you got some crackle on the bottom "horn"? Interesting - your cavity is completely different from mine...
BTW - nice colour choice - the pickguard should set off the rest nicely. Have you got a red tortoise shell pickguard? If not - email me.
-
Yeah, lot of crackling going on. Lots of DB-approved sanding back to come.
I ordered a pickguard last night. But if it's rubbish I will give you a holler. Thanks! :D
-
No worries - have a VP one here that's currently template material for a black one. Not a tortoise shell person so I can't see myself using it in a hurry.

Hardware test with new colour. The white pickguard looks a lot better than I thought it would, so I can't wait to see how the tortoiseshell one does...

Looking sweet! At least if the tortoise shell one doesn't work, you've got a good option there!
-
-
And lo, it doth appear!
Very pleased with the look of the tortoiseshell- I can see there will be some alignment issues to contend with if I go ahead with replacing the white guard (the t'shell is a lot narrower in places) but I think the end result will make it worthwhile persevering with.
Thoughts? Opinions?

The tortoiseshell really sets it off. Suppose its just whether its going to cover your existing holes or how much work in refilling and painting. Looks classy though.
-
The white looks good... the tortoiseshell looks better. It's worth the effort.
-
Heck yes to the tortoiseshell. Complements the colour nicely.
-
Not a tortoiseshell fan, but it's a nice fit for this guitar.
-
The "ayes" have it, and I'm glad. Tortoiseshell it is!
