Hi guys
just saying hello this is my first go at painting and building I usually just buy them, Phrozin is my ol man he doesn't want to do any more painting as he is having lots of skin cancers on his arms some have been pretty nasty, I'm not as good as him at painting but I can pick his brain I've got myself 2 kits a Stratocaster with an ash body and an ES hollow body I look forward to chatting to you all. Hope I don't bugger them up

Hi and welcome Max. I hope your dad is OK!
As far as the binding is concerned: it is common for the stain to creep into the cracks.
For the TL-1TB kit I did, I sealed the binding (using tru-oil). I taped it up. Then added the stain. This seems to have worked.
You may be able to scrape the binding to remove the top surface (and hopefully the stain marks). There is a post from Simon B (I can't find it atm) but I'm sure it mentions that he painted the binding!!!

Mum and Dad are in America they went to the NAMM show and then to Egypt so their away for another 3 weeks when he rings next time ill run it by him as I don't know about fixing this, ill try to scrape it I watched youtube might haft to put new plastic strips which I have no clue about, I probably haft wait for dad to get home and see if he will fix it but he doesn't want to paint anymore, was looking forward to doing it never had an ES

I know this is a common problem, so if you go searching you may find various solutions. I remember Simon painting. Once you have it clean, putting some clear on it before adding any more stain, as TD suggests, makes great sense.
I tried staining an ES, but botched it and went with a solid color...but before that a bit of a problem like yours, although not as bad. I was able to get rid of most of it by scraping. It really just depends on how deep the crack is. Worth a try.

You get to practice the patience, which is one of the hardest luthiery skills to master ;-) (I have not mastered it, that's for sure). Your Dad has done some really impressive paint jobs. Even though you are just starting out, having great equipment and a master to learn from will pay off, I am sure.
I started off with an ES too, before working on a strat body. That's definitely the hard way. There is something to be said for honing your skills on the easier project before going to the hard one. Sound's like a good strategy.
I can spray paint but not a scratch on the ol man his guitars look crazy good, I ordered new plastic strips I haft to fix it as cost me heaps to buy it I've got a strat which I'm doing while I wait to fix the ES, and a les Paul I just orderedQuote:

That looks great! I have tried for that color and missed on several occasions!

No, it actually darkened a little with the clears as I used Tru Oil. I was hoping it would darken a lot more than it did. My issue was that I went with the Dingotone stains which I'd never used before. Plus, it's a mahogany body and the colour just didn't work on it. The original kit I ordered was not mahogany but they'd actually sold the last one of what I wanted and it wasn't updated on the site. On that we can agree. I was going after that beautiful old Gibson burgundy/red clear finish that SG and ES guitars sometimes have (as well as my old Epi Newport, my first bass). Failing that, I tried red...like the old Gibson solid reds. Failing that I tried again with two different stains, two different clears and a fair amount of sanding back and re-doing. I got close this time, but don't think I could replicate it.Quote:

I just mix 1/4 jar of white and a few drops of walnut stain till you get the right shade and use vinyl fine-line tape to keep the edge sharp, and use a touch-up gun so you don't put it on too thick, you can pick up touch up gun pretty cheap on eBay, Max didn't check the kit before he started it, im not going to do anything on his kits, he's done a beautiful looking strat I'm a bit impressed. Here is some progress on my kits the Stratocaster I did everything the ES dad fixed the plastic which was pretty bad, dad has said I need to sand it down with water and sandpaper and spray it down with some more clear, the Stratocaster I did everything as dad was on Holliday but he said to leave it for 2 weeks before I got to polish it, I used dads dyes the yellow is called daffodil yellow, racing red on the back and sides, dad mixed up paint to do the plastic strips and I used black and racing red to do the burst
The strat I used the same yellow on the middle and some red dad had in the cupboard on the burst didn't have a name on it, I'm still doing a les paul as the back has some slits in the wood I did walnut but the splits still show so dads going to paint the back and sides with black, he did the bust on it as well as I buggered it up twice but will put some pictures when he does that for me. This is my 1st time doing these kits but their not very good quality, I have a squire hard tail Stratocaster which is black which I don't like Dads going to paint it in candy orange as I've never painted candy paint dad has said he will do it but its the last time he paints as he got a bit funny since the cut the top of his hand off as his fingers are numb and he can't feel the gun trigger he's had 6 more cut out since then 1 is 30cm long so I don't blame him anyhow I probably get in trouble when he reads that thank you guys

You're dad posted about his hand sometime ago, so I don't think you'll be in too much trouble. Sorry that he is still having trouble with it. Hope they've finally got it and he's on the mend. He's a popular guy around here ;-)
Looks like the apple did not fall far from the tree. If that's what mine looked like after finial buffing and polishing I'd be pretty happy!

Hi guys some updates I buggered up the Stratocaster flew out of my hands and scratched it with the polisher didn't think it was so powerful so dad is redoing it so he's now doing the led Paul, the Stratocaster, and my squire hard tail Stratocaster in candy tangerine I've never sprayed candys but dad can do them with his eyes closed ill get some pictures when dads finished painting today
