Wayne’s IB-1S
Hi all, time for my second PB guitar build, this time something completely different from the last. Wish me luck, it’s been 2 years since the ES-3 and am looking forward to another great time creating something unique. I have no idea what direction I’m going with it yet as the kit arrived the day before I had cochlear surgery and I haven’t really had time yet to consider the possibilities, but have at least two weeks off work to think about it.
Wayne.

Hope the surgery went well, and that you have some time soon to get into the build!

Thanks John, hope to get out tomorrow to source some supplies, stains for some test colours. Might go with a bluish top and headstock, something to go with the dragon on the fretboard.

Sounds good! At least you’ve got some time away from work to play around with the stains

Well, just into my second week at home from surgery and I just can’t help myself, sanded, stained and grainfilling done. I guess I’ll be in trouble again when the boss gets home from work, stain all over my fingers where the rubber gloves melted. Stained the neck and back in “Teak”. I don’t know how I’m going to do it yet,but I will see if I can imitate the lines and colours of the spalted top, onto the headstock. Can we order a matching headstock veneer, never mind, too late now. I have a lot of pictures to put up,but adjusting them to fit on the site is a pain.

You should be able to get some spalted maple veneer easily, especially just a headstock sized bit. It's not hard to just cut it roughly to shape, stick it on, then trim down to size. It's never going to match exactly, but any spalt effect will look good.

Thanks Simon for your input, unfortunately I can’t source any spalted nearby so I will go with original plan and imitate the look. I’m going to stain over anyway.

Well, here is a couple of pics of the spalted top on the IB-1S and my attempt to copy the grain pattern onto the headstock. The color is a bit dark in the picture as the stain is still wet,but not a bad attempt.

Hi Wayne, that worked out really well on the headstock.
