JM 1 Custom Kit
Hey folks
After the relative success of my SG kit from last year
Attachment 20936
I have ordered a custom JM 1 kit which I hope will arrive next week. This is going to be the first time I will spray a body so any help along the way would be great.
I am going to go for that vintage surf look. I am going to try spray it daphine blue

And gloss it up.
My main question now is what kind of pickups would you guys recommend for a nice warm clean tone? The body will hopefully be routed for 2 single coils. I was looking into the dimarzios. But open to suggestions, as long as I can get them in cream colour. I wouldn't want to spend much more than 250-300AUD for both.
Hopefully upload photos of the kit when it arrives soon!! 🤘🏽

Hi Freaky, I don't remember your first SG build but it looks sweet. Is that ash was it a custom order ?
Some people have put P90 pickups in JM builds, I would go for P90's over 2 single coil pups. See if you can find Dedman's latest surf style JM build looks really cool.
Dahpne blue will look good with the turtoise shell pickguard and a popular colour for that model

Hi freaky, I like your plan, here's how mine wenrt
http://www.buildyourownguitar.com.au...ead.php?t=7310
it had the huge swimming pool rout so the Jazzmaster pick ups dropped straight in. Sounds perfect for surf tones played clean, add some drive and they dirty up and become quite nasty
I'm, waiting on a Jnr kustom kit in the same order I think

Thanks dedman, awesome looking guitar! Turned out great! Mine is a custom order and I have asked for single coil routing with no scratchplate, so guess I'll have to see when it arrives to see what I can fit in. If anyone does have recommendations for cream single coils for clean warm tone much appreciated.

are you using a trem or is it going to be hard tail?
you can always buy a set of cream covers for what ever single coils grab you.

Thanks for that link! I'll keep that in mind. Yeah I think I might put a "bigsby" style trem on it. It's actually going to have a tele bridge and controls. I was going to ask how u put the tren arm on yours? With my SG I used a vibraplate, handy but costs over 100bucks for a piece of metal!! Did u drill into your body?

Hey Freaky, if using a tele bridge and 2 single pups I recommend Tonerider hot classics or if you want a mini humbucker (that is coil splittable) in the bridge the Kent Armstrong pups are pretty awesome

Freaky, I custom ordered mine set up for the Bigsby, so yep, its screwed to the body

I have that very same R&F Daphne Blue paint just waiting to go on my (being refurbished) 1993 Japanese Strat. Unfortunately the weather here changed last night - thunderstorms and torrential rain, and it's warm, humid with occasional drizzle here today, so not ideal spraying weather.
I'd strongly suggest using the cellulose sealer/primer on the body first. e.g. http://www.rothkoandfrost.com/cellul...white-or-grey/
My Strat's body is also basswood (because it had a FotoFlame finish which apparently wouldn't stick to ash or alder) which is very soft and easily marked. However smooth you think you've got the body, it's not until you get some paint on that you can really tell how smooth it is. I had to do a fair bit of sanding down after my first coat of primer as it showed up lots of marks. A couple more coats helped fill in the tiny imperfections remaining.
The primer will also help stop the nitro sinking into the body, so it's easier to get a nice flat finish that will polish well.
Good luck with your JM-1 build!

Has anyone used spray max 2k before? I have heard good things so I think I may go with them for primer filler and lawyer. Rothko and frost for colour coat.
