Maddog's STA-1
This will be my first build
It's on its way as I type this so I'll post some pics when it arrives
The current plan is:
Black Body (using dingotone Black Stump)
Black pickguard
clear neck
gold hardware
The basic idea being to get the gold hardware to really stand out from the black body
I haven't decided yet whether to do the headstock in clear or black to contrast the machine heads.
In reading around I've seen people mention using Timbermate to highlight the grain. Would this show up with a black stain? If so, what colour Timbermate should I look at? (Ash body that I haven't seen yet)
This is as much about learning for me as ending up with a great guitar

hey Maddog, welcome to the forum and your plans sound great. Post some pics of the body when it arrives. Grain filling may only level it off than make visual improvements if you use black stump. I still think its worth grain filling so go for a dark timbermate or a light timbermate will highlight the grain more.
I built a ash explorer but didn't grain fill but was happy how it looked. Without the grain filling I got the grain lines showing through in a lighter colour

Nice purchase Mad Dog should be a cool build. As Wokka said, black Timbermate will not really highlight the grain that much. Grain filling will probably be needed as it is an ash body and ash is very pourous so unless you want to have all the holes and divets from the wood it is always a good idea.

I was hoping this would arrive today so I could start working on it over the weekend, but Auspost were just teasing me (I know it's in Melbourne)

nice one Maddog, the ash grain looks unreal and the neck grain is great too. Has this got a ash cap on it ? some of the latest STA-1 kits have glued a veneer to the top
