Hi all,
After something of a wobbly start, my next kit arrived in the mail yesterday. Love the Austpost tracking emails, I knew when the local driver had it in his van, and living in the country that it wouldn't be long until I got my hands on it.
First things first, the name. As we live on the surf coast, I figured I'd go with a theme that fits the area and my wife suggested Winkipop (winki to the locals) which is a surf break at Bells Beach. So Winki it is.
By chance, I had ordered some Azure lagoon wudtone for the IB1 I was going to build but due to unforeseen circumstances didn't happen. So an azure blue surf Tele it is then.
Looking at the kit all was in order and the body is relatively sound save for a couple of glue spots which should come out with some elbow grease and 120 grade.
A dry build didn't show up any thing untoward so it was off to the garage for a few hours sanding. To date I've spent 6 hours all up prepping the body for the wudtone including the drilling. All without incident.
Cheers
Glenn

Whilst the sanding progressed, it was time to consider the headstock. I did consider the standard Tele head but I'd prefer not to try and make it look like something it's not. So it was off on the surf coast tangent again and trying to incorporate waves or surfboards or something similar in t the design. The other thing I try to do is to incorporate the curves available on the body into the shaping exercise. In this instance I came up with several options, mostly using the pick guard as the template for shaping.
After several attempts and locking in a plan overnight, I still wasn't entirely happy with the design so outsourced it to Mrs G with a brief requiring surfy type shapes.
And so it came to be that Winki got a headstock. Shaped and sanded this afternoon.
That's about it for tonight. About to settle in for another day of the tour.
Cheers
Glenn

That's really cool Glenn.

Great creative start! Love the headstock already!

Fantastic headstock! Can't wait to see the build. What colour do you have in mind?
-
Azure lagoon with a natural neck and oiled fret board. I ordered the colour for another guitar that didnt happen and couldn't bring myself to waste it so that's what it'll be. Some nice marbling on the back too so watch this space.
