:( I've already tried all that. Have even gone through and done most of the joints again just to make sure there isn't a dry joint or anything :/

So it's all working properly with no hum on your cardboard wiring template then?, if so, then maybe it might have something to do with the insides of the guitar, or maybe something that only causes the hum when the pickups, etc are installed in the guitar.
I'm guessing that it could be that the bridge needs to be connected to a ground wire that connects to a suitable ground point on one of the pots, try re-installing the pickups and controls, etc in your guitar then see if you can get your husband to check with a multimeter to see if there's continuity between the bridge and the sleeve connection of the output jack, if there's no continuity then that's most likely what's causing the hum.
How loud is the hum in comparison to the sound you get when tapping the pickups?, is it a fairly loud hum, or a soft background hum?
I know from experience just how frustrating it can be to try and find the cause of a fault in electrical equipment, just keep persevering and eventually you'll have a win.
Hope that helps.
Hey Doc, no it is humming in the cardboard template. If you check out my video (below) you will hear the sound it is making.
The other night when I did it there was no buzz/hum, then when installed it buzzed like it is now so I took out the loom and am where I am now... Back to square 1... Hopefully I get it sorted :( thinking of getting braided cable and going form the top again :/

@Shazzrandom: I'm not an expert in guitar cabling, but you seem to have a lot of long unshielded cable runs.
To the more knowledgeable guys, could these be the issue, picking up noise from TV, lights, etc?
As an electrical engineer who hasn't touched real electrical engineering for 20 years it all looks like a lot if nice antennas.
Shazz, were you in the same conditions when you tested it clean the first time? Ie. did you have less electrical devices on around you and were you testing in the same place in your house?

Shazz on the test video the circuit isn't earthed to anything so it probably will buzz. Some of the solder is caked on the back of the pots so I am thinking one of the pots aren't earthed properly and not making full contact with a pot casing.
Double check that no earth points on pots have come apart from the casing
Otherwise re-do the soldering with braided wire might be the best option.
Also Fred has made a good point about any electrical devices nearby could be causing interference.
If I build a hollow body in the future I will only use braided wire from experience from other buillders.
That white wire not connected to anything I presume is the bridge post earth wire. Try exposing some bare wire and hold it with your fingers to see if that earths the circuit and stops the hum
Yeah, I reckon changing those long wire runs to some shielded/braided wire should definitely help alot in getting rid of that hum I hear in the video, I just watched it and at times, to my ears, it sounds like you're actually picking up some radio-stations along with the hum, a classic symptom of Radio-Frequency Interference, something which should be cured by the braided wiring.
Hey Shazz,
Personally, I would file the loom in the bin and start again but with better quality wire and pots.
I reckon your problem is a dodgy pot?.. Thoughts guys?
I'm with Wokks. Complete the circuit in the guitar first, check continuity of circuit. If the ground circuit isn't complete that's why it's humming I think
I've never had RFI issues in a humbucking guitar
Shazz, DB grew up in or near Bowral and the surrounding areas, he's only been living in WA for about 3 years or so
Ahhh, the mystical town of Robbo :p
When I was kid, before the dams got built Robbo would often be lost in thick pea soup fogs....
Great Cheeze, and the best potatoes in the world come from Robbo!
I lived their 78-80 lots of good memories from another era.
12ft of Gavvit braided cable has been purchased from the states... I'm restarting y'all! Gunna have a look for some pots :)
One website you could try for pots, etc is this one:
www.evatco.com.au
Click on their products list.
And another one, in Australia, with very fast deliveries: www.realparts.com.au
Realparts have been great,
and with the expanding selelction of stuff added every day almost, dont forget to check here!
Definitely.
They have a good range of pots for guitars, wiring, etc.
And so far service is one of the best I've seen. I'm at my fourth order and haven't had a single issue, which is very unusual these days...

I just ebayed some when I got the wire too :/ hopefully they go alright! I'm getting 10 so I have a few to practice with ;)
Shazz why you buying wire from USA and pots (I assume) off ebay ?
go to the PBG shop or if they haven't got it go to Realparts
I think Shazz is trying to become the first lady to get banished to the naughty warehouse....
Better start tidying the joint up, fellas :p
do we have to put the toilet seat down too?
Or drop me pvt and ask if i have it, i have bins fill of parts and wire.
wow we better clean up the naughty warehouse, first female inmate !
on the bright side DB she wasn't caught shopping in the big green shed !
Shazz what is you poison I am the NW barman ?
^ Another reason why I love this community, the generosity of folk to share knowledge and parts :)
OK, Shazz. I am in a happy mood today so I will let you off with a warning.... :)
@ DB I didn't get any warnings you just threw me into the Naughty room back then, think I was your first inmate ?
you were a serial offender wokks... and DB is the hanging judge
dont worry Shazz, it's not banishment, we are all in here anyway...
Yep. No one gets out alive :p
Actually it was Miss Fe that banished you to the NR first time round, Woks...
Something about not reading instructions before using a certain Guitar finish if I remember.
'Twas a double whammy, off DB's Xmas card list and a long stay in the NR...
haha ok I remember now DB, it's called a bloke who never reads instructions, always dive straight into the job !
I'm pretty happy in the NW anyway being barman has it's perks and endless supply of Little Creatures beer on tap !
