First person I have seen on this forum to seal a rosewood fret board. Not a complete sin as Ric do it on all of their guitars. Just not the traditional approach and hope it works out well for you.

Yea i got the idea from my luthier bro in law, he seals all his fretboards and they look awesome, heres some pics

And this site is all about being unique and different, so......im willing to give it a go
cool Nitro, how well does the poly last on fretboards?
gives them a nice look
Cool thanks for that, not a bad idea
It will be interesting to see how the finish holds up on the fret board under playing conditions. Not sure how many coats are on traditional maple boards yet they seem to take lots of punishment before looking aged or relic.
Yes im interested too although ive only put 2 thin coats on and wipe on poly is poly thinned with about 30% mineral spirits so the film its getting is very thin.
BTW thanks for your input Waz.
Afterthought....seeing as im only an occasional player it'll never get the beating that most of you guys would give it...lol
Double filled all the veneer cracks with the black timbermate and gave it a good sand, came up well.
Gave the neck only 2 thin coats of wipe on poly, a light sand with 1,000 grit and one more thin coat. It looks good, matt finish but it has highlighted the grain without a heavy buildup of poly.
Gave the veneer a coat of wipe on ploly

and fitted the neck for some pics....

it's coming up well, great looking SG
Ordered a Graph Tech TUSQ XL Guitar Nut and it came today
Attachment 14869
needs some work to fit but should be ok, its a bit thin but the custom truss rod cover should butt up to it.

Had a spare weekend so decided to some more work on the SG.
When i glued the veneer on the the top of the guitar there was a bit of gravel that got caught between the bench and the back of the guitar, leaving a considerable dent!
Attachment 15019
So after some considerable youtube research i decided to have a crack at it. I had to sand and redo the stain on the back again anyway as the stain brought out some considerable scratches that i had been too slack to sand out..

Attachment 15022 Attachment 15023
Youtube said that if you use a wet cloth and a soldering iron the wood will swell, esp if it is bare, so i power sanded out all the scratches and went over it with 240 and then 400 grit
Attachment 15024 Attachment 15025
and then used the wet rag and soldering iron technique
Attachment 15026 Attachment 15027
As you can see it turned out a treat.
I put on a coat of stain and you could hardly see it.
Attachment 15028 Attachment 15029 Attachment 15030
( On the pic above the dent is in the exact center ) 2 coats of stain and one coat of wipe on poly, very happy with the results.

Good save and looks terrific.
good save Nitro and you have learnt a new skill so win win !
Next...... I didnt like the plastic trussrod cover so i glued a veneer of the walnut onto it, shaped it a gave it a few coats of poly.
Looks good with the new graphite nut.

Another good idea. On both my Explorers I found rosewood truss rod covers on eBay and used them instead of the daggy standard plastic one that comes with each kit.
Can I suggest that you might want to try a light rounding off of the two corners on the thin edge of the trussrod cover to make it look less angular, as everything else on the headstock is also rounded? I know it's a bit more work and you'd have to touch up with the poly, but I think it would look a bit more upmarket. Just my opinion.
Traced out the modded pickguard shape onto paper and cut it out. Placed it on the guitar to see what it will look like. Think it will be ok. very different.
Comments welcome before i cut it out for real

Traced out on the pickguard blank.

cool shaped pickguard Nitro, is there any way to make it a bit smaller as you are covering a fair bit of that veneer ?
mock build looks great
My thoughts as well. You've spent a lot of time on that veneer and now you're covering most of it up. You could simply loose the top wing, unless you now need some pickguard there to mount the pickup selector switch.
Your axe but I would go naked after all the hard work doing the veneered top. Could end up with too many competing patterns on top that may detract rather than enhance. Sometimes less is more if you know what I mean?
Bummer. In hindsight some sort of filler in the PUP cavities for the veneer to sit on top of may have done the trick. Not too late to either make or purchase timber PUP rings to suit. Real Parts has Rosewood ones... http://www.realparts.com.au/hardware...-rosewood.html

Not cheap at $42 per set plus minimum $7.90 postage. Also come in blond maple too.
Yeah they are dead easy to make with a scroll saw
@wazkelly @nickasaurus on pge 12 nd 13 of this build i put it to the forum, fill cavities or pickguard and the gurus of this forum said pickguard so its too late to change, and as i said to Simon i need a pickguard because im changing the 3 way switch position.
stick with your vision ;D
Thanks dead. This site is about vision, making something uniquely your own, oh guru of inovation and wonderful weirdness! @deadman
LOL thanks....I think :p
All cool Nitro. Hope everything works out as you have planned.
Another option would be wider pickup rings and a custom switch plate and make a feature of them, gives you more view of the top.
Having said that, do it however you like, your build and it's looking good
