Woltz's 2nd Scratch Build

I think this post may catch the attention of FrankenWashie.

It's been a busy few weeks but now that I will have some free time again, it's time to get back into it.

Decided today was a good day to mock up the headstock using MDF to see if the tuners I purchased fit.

It's tight but there doesn't appear to be any tuners that collide with each other.

I'd be tempted to make those slots as wide as you can get away with to help you get the strings on and off. I'd have been tempted to use locking tuners (locking from the bottom types) for the slots just to make that easier. You could use locking tuners throughout but they add a lot of weight to the headstock, not something you want when you are already starting out with 12 tuners, so 6 locking + 6 normal would be a decent compromise (unless you can find really light alloy ones).

Yep I'll be making the slots wider than they are here in the mock up. And I'll make the actual headstock a little thinner than this piece of mdf was as well.

I didn't have much choice in my selection of tuners unfortunately because of this style of headstock. Doing a more conventional 12 string headstock would've been easier. But I guess where is the fun in that haha.

Yep 100%. The only locking tuners that I know would fit were Schaller M6 Minis. And the price here in Australia would've cost more than the rest of the guitar.

These are worth considering for the future. https://www.northwestguitars.co.uk/j...g-es-acoustic/ 20% less than that as you won't get charged VAT, which will help offset shipping costs. Same size as the Gotohs (within 0.5mm). Smooth action and a 19:1 ratio (one better than the Gotohs). I've had two sets.

You need to remove the locking pins and sand them down at the end before use as they do have some sharp edges at the top that can snap the thinner strings, but I'd recommend doing that with any locking tuner.

Not sure if these would actually fit this particular headstock. The Gotohs I have are the SG360 which are smaller than the regular Gotoh tuners.

Maybe not then. Same basic size but you need ones with the straight, not angled, anti-rotation screw lug.
