Hi DB. Why 21 days? The instructions on the tin says 48 hours.
Salo, 48 hours curing is rubbish - maybe between coats but the layer of coats needs time to fully cure before you can polish it.
it does take 2-3 weeks so 3 weeks is on the safe side
@Tony. I'm with you, I just love the colour. My late son had a 1978 Fender Telecaster in that colour and regrettably I let it go because it wasn't genuine. It had the wrong pups and tuners and I swapped it for a Les Paul (Epiphone). So the Teli you see in the photo is my attempt to recreate that guitar.
@Wokka. I think your right because one of the instructions on the tin also said that after five coats, rub it with 400 w/d with mineral spirits and I had the sense to realize that there is no way that mineral spirits is getting anywhere near the paint job. Thanks for the advise.
Salo, leave it for at least 21 days to fully cure..
If you try to cut and polish before then it will end in tears...
How do I know this? Experience...
Edit.. I see Woks has already given you this advice :p
Thanks DB. I will follow your advise.
I just wish the instructions on the tins were more accurate....
As Woks said, 48 hours between coats would be better.. (Even though in reality you can re coat after 4 or 5 hours in nice weather)
It really annoys me because I know how much this build means to you and to have it go pear shaped due to inaccurate instructions would be devastating...
I have bought this up with the manufacturer and got absolutely no response....
Pity, as it is a good product but I wonder how many folk have ended up with a crappy finish due to the bad instructions?
Oh well, I am glad we helped you to avoid disappointment:)
Cant wait to see the end result, I can see it is going to be a beautiful Guitar with a whole lot of meaning.
Have been patiently waiting the gestation period and it was born yesterday. Welcome baby

I really want to thank DB and Woks for their advice. I did an experiment on a piece of scrap wood on which I did a couple coats of clear. not because I doubted their advice but to see what happens. Let it cure for 5 days and then hit it with 800 grit wet/dry paper and there were these white patches in the finish. Obviously clear coats not cured. Thanks boys, I'll buy you a beer if ever we meet.
That has come up beautifully Salo :)
