Very nice, Gav. Looks superb. And it goes boomp boomp as it should do.
Don't forget to cut the strings so that you can poke the ends down inside the holes in the tuners after you've done the fret dress. It's the original locking tuner design.
Are you going to fit a string tree for the D & G strings?

Hi Gav, have to agree with Woks & Ponch about the covers. Love that colour scheme.
Just a heads up about the string retainer on the headstock.... I see you haven't fitted one yet and may find the need to do so once playing this axe more frequently. Also spotted not much string wrap on the A string post and as you haven't trimmed it up suggest getting at least one or 2 full winds going down the post as this helps to create enough break angle to keep the A string in the nut.
How do I know this stuff??? When re-stringing my J Bass a couple of months ago I cut the string lengths before wrapping on the posts and as a result the A string can pop out of the nut when aggressively playing that string, particularly when played open. Easy fix is to just replace that one string and leave a fair bit more length on it which I will get around to one day soon.

Waz - great comments man thanks a bunch. This is my first bass with these tuners, and my first F-style bass period. My ignorance is a thing of legend! I will re-wrap all the strings as you suggest and get that string tree in there. Not sure yet how to incorporate Simon's down the hole string lockign method but I want that in there too!

You just need to work out how much string to leave past the tuner before you cut it off, bend the last centimetre over at 90° (I use pliers), then poke the end down the middle of the tuner. Then bend the string down the edges of the slot and start winding away. No loose ends flapping about or sticking out to impale someone with. Same as with Fender's slotted guitar tuners.

At the risk of teaching others to suck eggs, my personal rule for how much string to wrap is to basically cut the string at the length of the headstock past the tuner, then do the 90 degree bend and poke the end down the hole as Simon says. That "headstock length" of extra string seems to work pretty well on guitars and basses for me (with the proviso that this is for 6-in-line headstocks rather than 3+3 ones).Quote:
