I think lifes got in the way of the best hobby in the world. Had 2 deaths in the family quite close together and a hernia op, put me out for awhile but im back. Doing a 65 fender jaguar kit from a JM-1 the link is in my sinature below. Btw love the finishes on your axes, dont ever stop using your talent mate.
hi guys bit of an update on the lag, i decided to smooth out the front of the body as wasn't sold on the lip, i have tried something different i laid down a red base coat 2 coats and went over the top with candy apple red tint its come out a very deep blood red rather than a silver base and put 6 coats of clear the pic's dont do it justice. Paint is pretty soft as weather sucks atm here in Adelaide going to haft to leave it a week before i polish it have put up a pic that shows the ridge on the front more pic's to come but you can see where im going with it

Cheers guys, the Lag is finished very pleased with it its now in my top 3 guitars i have and play every day, colour is amazing but cant get a pic that shows it, i have upgraded pups and surrounds from black to cream, pots and control knobs to Les Paul type. for those who want to copy the colour its 4 coats of hi fill then 3 coats of shanghai red then 4 coats candy apple clear then 10 coats of clear lacquer w&d then 2 flow coats all up i have 110 hours in it heap of sanding to level out the front and smooth out where the knobs are went the extra mile because it will replace my Les Paul with i find to hard to play in a wheelchair anyhow hope you guys like it. that's me till after xmas and PBG have no stock of the one i want

@Sonic yeh mate i know i have a thing with strats and there easier to play in the chair but they all have sounds of there own, its just a shame Adam no longer sell any pauls and the ones on Ebay aren't as good i don't think,

Phrozin, are you going with the Tune-O-Matic bridge and stop tail and are happy to drill the post holes, or maybe getting a more Fender-like hardtail bridge which just screws on?
Another one? You are a machine mate! Very inspiring work for all of us. Beautiful work, just beautiful.
@ Simon i'm doing a string through on it have ordered top mount Ferrules i have the bottom Ferrules the bridge i'm going with Tune-O-Matic Simon but thinking about a roller, don't have any concerns drilling the holes for the bridge, im going to use a brad point drill bit for that and use a drill press, since i been doing the guitars i have purchased just about every tool needed to do them. I was only working on the bridge today I love theses type guitars so i'm going to go whole hog on this 1, i got 11 Strats and 3 Teles and only 2 humbucker Tune-O-Matic a Gibson les paul and the Lag which i love i cant play the les paul cause its just to heavy for me in the chair to hard to get a balance
@ ILRGuitars cheers mate yeh i know keeps me out of trouble
Hi Guys and gals have some updates this is a Ashton 130 i picked up from Cash converters picked it up pretty cheap needed some loving i had to redo the bridge as it was out and a real good setup, i have resprayed with mica red with a candy apple red clear over that and then cleared, fitted Wilkinson pups alloy pick guard and anodized red. its come out really nice and sound pretty good better than i thought it would here some pic's of him and for those who want to know it was done with spray gun

A wonderful job as always, Phroz.
here is my GS2Q not finished yet as still waiting for parts (bridge, top mount string Ferrules) i would not recommend this kit for the 1st time builder as had some really tricky issues to fix the veneer was higher than the binding and over it in places which took a fair wile with a blade to get it sitting against the binding and the neck took heaps of work to get it just right and of cause the bridge and top and bottom Ferrules that need some pretty accurate drilling not for the faint of heart. Any off them done wrong would bugger up the guitar. i have gone with a yellow dye and a brown dye which i diluted quite a bit to get the back light enough but did a full strength to show the mahogany grain 1st then sanded back with full strength brown to highlight the grain, Dyes i used were Rit dye's i got from lincraft and worked really good. i sprayed the same diluted brown for the burst and went finally over with clear its not finished yet

And even more good work. Is there a slight arch to the top?
you really do have a great eye for colour Phroz.
yeh there is Simon its a really nice looking kit was better than expected it was way better, i cant wait to hear it i'm a bit of a sucker for strat like guitars and super strats
cheers Dedman i just sit and look at it for an hour or so before i start and try imagine what it will look like
heres a 3 day wonder i been playing with rit dye with different strengths i found mixing 200ml to a box of powder worked best i did 2 coats and let it dry and then wipe it down with a damp sponge till i got the grain showing that i liked worked best, diluting it by 400ml was good for letting the colour to come to a more lighter shade, this isnt a final job as i did it in 3 days, i dye and damp sponge day 1, i shot the clear day 2 and wet&dry and polish day 3. Im going to try some more colours have done yellow, brown and red so far which i'm very pleased with results. I'm going to try blue and green this week, using it was not much different from using colortone dye had no issues with lacquer in fact it was pretty painless so here's a few pic's a pack of the powder was $8.50 far cheaper than dna candys which were just over $220 a tin but you get a lot of body's out of a tin, i think you can get Spray chief for $125 a tin but you require good gun skills to keep it even and not blotchy
here is dye before sponge
Attachment 25468
here is just cleared just 1 double header coat
Attachment 25469
here a quick polish

came ok and real easy to work with pain free

More great work, Phroz.
HELP
I need some advice guys i got my bridge for my new build but i noticed the bridge on my Lag and Les Paul is fitted slightly scewed why is it like that for a tuneamatic i am fitting a roller bridge is intonation harder on a straight fitted bridge?? Simon? also is there a set angle for the string through Ferrules set up or anything is ok ?
Yeah the bridge on a tunematic is slanted away from the neck on the low 'E' side by around 3mm.
I find my low 'E" adjustment always ends up way back because I like a lighter gauge string, so I think its pretty important to have that compensation angle on it.
I don't think the ferrules for a string through need to be on an angle, they are prior to the bridge so I don't think it really matters. On the Flying 'V's they are in a V shape pattern.
