Did heaps more sanding, sides back, all ready for the stain

Wiped the top with metho to get an idea of what the finished colour will be like, then put it up against the neck colour.

that looks unreal Nitro good work. Will the veneer just be natural finish ? Think it's gonna pop big time
That Feast Watson Golden Teak looks so much like DT Coolangatta Gold.
Very nice!
I was looking for a nice veneer for my SG but haven't found anything as nice as this yet... maybe I should look harder!
Im not using a high gloss finish this time, think id like to have a satin lustre, so am going to use satin wipe on poly to see how that goes, im going for a more natural timber finish.
heres some pics of 1st coat.

Hey nitro, sorry missed that!
I'd be interested by something quite light in colour as I want to tint it purple. Initial plan was to get a flamed maple top.
Would be awesome if your brother in law can get a nice bookmarked veneer!
What did you use for the wipe on poly? Feast & Watson?
Cheers!
Attachment 14627 useing this, love the stuff. Will get in contact with Baz and see what hes got. Will pm you when he gets back to me. cheers
Cheers. Where do you get Minwax from? I've been wanting to try it out and can't seem to find it...
Fred have you tried Masters (they have almost closed down) or the big green shed ? Think one or the other may only sell either gloss or satin, I can't remember
Green shed don't sell it. They have the Feast & Watson version which I tried with good results on my red plywood strat. But it's oil based so gives a slight yellow tint. I was keen to try the Minwax water based one.
Masters is just to far from me...
no worries Fred, well Nitro may see your query and help you. I've never used it. Otherwise try any other local hardware or maybe a larger paint shop
I think I scored some Minwax (some time ago) in my local Bunnings. Rusty tin (ok inside), on sale as it looked like it had been on the shelf for ever
Minwax Wipe-On Poly has both Oil and Water based versions. The place I used to get it from no longer carry it, but try: Where to buy...
Ok, i asked my relly but he is shutting up shop due to ill health sadly, im very upset. Did a quick search online for you and found this australian site. They have heaps of good veneers for a reasonable price, give em a go....

And heres a link to the Minwax water based wipe on poly, you order it and pick it up at your local woolies store.

No worries. Thanks heaps for these links! I'm going to check these out!
NEXT STEP..
The veneer had a few ripples in it so my bro in law said to use a damp cloth over the top and use a steam iron to flatten them out, he said i can do that because i used a water based glue.
It worked a treat. because i didnt have many clamps i screwed some timbers to the roof of the shed, cut timbers and after putting a piece of melamine over the top, used the timber as braces.

After all was dry i checked the surface, some small cracks had appeared and the middle join was slightly opened. I used superglue and some walnut dust to fill the middle join.

With this guitar i want it to retain all the grain features, cracks, dents and undulations but at the same time look flat and smooth. To do this i looked round for a clear grain filler and found one from America but i got it from an Australian supplier.

Its crystal clear, non toxic, water based and can be sanded in a few hours after application. You can then put any product over the top. Water based clears, Thinners based, nitro, 1k or 2K, poly or turps based.

4th coat of wipe on poly to the neck
Attachment 14676 Attachment 14677
looking sweet as Nitro, that neck is looking pretty shiny after 4 coats, are those pics after it's cured or just applied ?
good stuff Nitro, so assume that's Miniwax gloss oil based ?
that veneer is going to look special after some clear coats
Just a side point for anyone who wants some wipe on poly, make your own......

Disaster....use the clear filler, left it overnight and checked it the next morning and it had crazed and turned white not clear. Aagghh. Left it till the weekend, still the same so spent 4 hrs sanding it all off and picking it out the cracks, used water and a scraper and sandpaper. Hope i havvnt wrecked the veneer. Went a little bit through the veneer when i was sanding, on one of the edges. Will post pics tonight.
ouch, clear coats and fillers seem to be the most difficult thing to get right and cure properly
so here what happened to the clear filler that i used

Any way i spent 4 hours sanding it back and picking it out of the cracks.
So i did some samples this time. which i should of done in the first place!
This image is of thinned down timbermate with black stain added
Attachment 14815
The next is of aquaclear wth black stain added
Attachment 14816
The last is of just the clear aquacoat
Attachment 14817
i decided on the thinned down stained Timbermate which i applied with a rag and buffed and wiped off the access.
Attachment 14818
I sanded back a section and applied some metho to simulate the clear...i think it will look ok after another thin coat or two of timbermate to build up coats and wipe off to fill the cracks only.
Attachment 14819
herea a few pics of the neck with 4 coats of wipe on poly dry, and the fretboard with the same but only 1 coat so far.
