no worries Andy I reckon once its cured for 3 weeks and you cut and polish it you should get the same level of gloss
Good to see someone in South East Qld finally turn out a good looking DT finish as I had seriously lost faith that it could ever be pulled off.
Thanks Waz. yeah the key is the thin coats.
I started applying DT stain between March and May 2016 where the humidity averages high and low were roughly between 53% and 95%. In March it spent more time at the higher end and now it spends more time around the 55% mark.
Dayum Son. Very noice 😁
Just in case anyone wants to see the contrast between the wet coat and 24 hours later, I thought i'd post some piccys.
So this is the result you can achieve with DT MkI after 3 thin finish coats using my technique. I have not buffed or polished the guitar in anyway.

That's come up very well Andy

now that is looking sweet, Andy
Thanks Andrew and Stan.
While I'm waiting for the finals to cure, I'm getting a few odd jobs done....
Fret leveling, fret polishing and dingowaxxxxxxx complete!

frets and fingerboard look smick as Andy, well done
when are you hoping to assemble it ?
thanks wokks, it think the 21 days are up at the first few weeks of june, but I've got a bit to do in the meantime. I'm not happy with the control cavity rout, I've got to copper shield it after that and I;ve got a real parts 3 ply pick guard i've got the re-shape a bit.;)
This is going to be one awesome tele!

sounds good Andy, what is wrong with the control cavity, do you need to make it deeper or enlarge it ?
Are you putting in a 4 way switch ?
Nah just a CLR switch and the Gotoh pots are really fat. I've just got to dig out under the switch a bit more and widen the sides near the pots a bit more too....otherwise I fear the the copper shielding will short out stuff
21 days were up the other day. wet sanded with micro mesh pads and cut and polish....yummy...

nice one Andy that is looking very shiny. Is that Dingotone final coats ?
you must be stoked ready to assemble and wire up ! You got Toneriders going in this and any other tasty upgrades ?
(sorry if you have already said in the diary, its hard to keep up with every build diary !)
Very nice indeed.
Thanks Wokks and Paps. That the Dingotone MkI three final coats using my thin coat method, then waiting 21 days to cure before the final polish. Still assembling it at the moment........(guitar pending...........)
nice one Andy, really great result and proof that the DT final coat mark 1 can give a really nice gloss. I got a similar ash tele with about 4 coats Mark 2 DT final coat and I'm pretty happy how that's coming along
Nice one Wokks. You got a build diary? would like to see how that one is progressing with MkII
Hey Andy, you know I can't even remember if I started a build diary. Don't think I did. When I get around to working on it I'll post some pics. This has got a DB baritone neck and some tasty hand wound pups.
I'm that busy answering forumite queries I run out of time to do build diaries these days haha
Sneaky preview of the Tele yumminess!!!
Tell you what I'm hooked on this build, the wife's even talking about letting me hang it in the loungeroom already.

wow Andy the mini preview looks very nice. That will be a mega bonus if it's ok by the minister to hang in the loungeroom !
Good stuff Andy, looks really nice. If this is going on the wall you'll have to buy another to build and play!

Thanks Andrew. I got a couple on the go, which at this pace I may get finished by the end of the year!
@Wokks, cheers mate......I see you're nearly at the 10,000 posts.....look out!
cheers Andy, yes I'm on a mission to reach 10k posts and am hoping Ads will give me moderator privileges so I can change DB's avatar as many times as he changed mine haha
I see you were up early about 5am your time posted 18 in a row good work mate !
Loving the preview Andy -Sort of in between Mahogany and Cherry red
Wow! Looks awesome Andy, didn't know you could get that sort of gloss level from Dingotone, looks like I'll have to give it a go.
Hi guys,
I thought I would mention that I wasn't entirely happy with my efforts on the final coats. It ended up a bit thin to polish it properly. I'm currently laying down 3 more final coats on the body and the neck to give me a but of a buffer to get her to shine with some micromesh etc. I haven't bothered to post photos as its all just much of the same.
No worries thanks for the update Andy. Worth putting in the yards until you are happy. Look forward to the final coats
Thanks Wokks and Nitro, yeah I rushed my first build, and even though I love that guitar to death, I swore I'd never rush another one.
Aww man, that preview looks too cool. Let's see some more of this beauty!
cheers,
Gav.
Thanks Gav.
Ok, This was the last final dry coat, put another on since then...sorry its just more of the same right now. Its pretty schinie even though no polishing has occurred.

Wow, looking great!
cheers,
Gav.
Stuffed one of the last final coats again wasn't thin enough. light sand wet 1200 girt flattened her out again, testing out an amended version of my thin coat method. Will keep ya'll updated.
I feel your pain as having similar finishing issues on my fretless neck.....just when you think it is done and going through all the grit levels only to ever so slightly go through too much of the finish thus requiring a touch up or even another couple of coats. Is the chillier weather having any effect?
Yeah it has Waz. There was a period, you may recall I think in April/May where we had warm dry weather. It was magic with the DT, I could do no wrong , but since it got "cold" (for Queenslandites only) it takes a little more time to cure and is less forgiving if you put too much on. I was also having trouble with "runs" when I wiped with the cloth with the grain as my fingertips are uneven. I now wrap the cloth over the end of a small eraser which creates a flat even surface to wipe with. I think again I may have it cracked.
PS finally at the end of your OS final coat....its all on my Tele body :)
