super badass mate, awesome job
I did about 8 or so really light coats, let it dry for a week, sanded with 1200 and then hit it with 2 more light sprays. Worked out pretty well. Its been played heaps and knocked around a little and has held up better than I expected.
I'm just as stunned (stunged?) by your progress as when I got stung on the fingertip by a paper wasp last week.
That made me sit up and take notice - so has this outstanding effort.
Keen to see more progress . . .
love your profile pic Maxxy, looks like you got a giant moustache. Proudly worn for Movember
Very cool.. nice work
@Stan & Tim: Thanks, lads.
@MaxAxe: Wow! High praise from the master of builds himself! Cheers, mate. :)
Thanks Pabs. I'll attack in a similar way then. Coat two went on tonight, I'll aim for 3 & 4 to go on tomorrow, 5 & 6 Friday, 7 & 8 Saturday, then leave 'er sit for a while. Cannot wait to have this bewdy done! Taken me far too long. :P
aaannnd it's raining today
we will need photos Brodie please !
Ask, and ye shall receive, Wokka.
Coat 4 is on, photos will be up shortly. ;)
Also, for those of you looking for a nice, satin (or gloss) finish that won't blow the bank, I cannot recommend this enough. Goes on so well, 2 hr touch dry, 6 hr recoat, and $11.50 a can is pretty jolly good (I'll get close to 5 or 6 coats out of one can!).

Four coats in, still on the first can. Should be pushing at least 1 more out, maybe 2. Then I'll buy another, crank out a couple more coats, sand 'er back, spray a few more times and enjoy the fruits of my labour. ;)
Awesome work Brodie looking the goods
Looks awesome, interested to see this assembled.
Alrighty then! Update time!
I have sprayed my final coat before the wet sand. I'll leave it to sit for a week or so, then consider attacking it with my liquid soaked 1200. After that one or two more light coats, then done!
Home stretch now!

Long time coming but so keen! I wanna play I wanna play :P
If you're going to put more clear on then the highest you can sand with is 800p, 600 being better. Otherwise there is a real danger of poor adhesion.
Oh yeah, forgot to say, "that looks brilliant, those have always been my favourite colour combos and yours is sweet!"
good to hear from you Johnny. Is that what you did with your Riccy, only went to 600 grit wet sanding before the final coats ?
Cheers mate, I'll bear that in mind. I might go 800 then, since Pablo used 1200 and it worked out for him. I don't want to go too low, because I run the risk of sand through otherwise. 600 is a lot more abrasive than one might think. :P
Haha! Nice little squeezed in afterthought. ;)
Thanks man.
Hey Wokka, that's what I do with everything I clear, give it a bit of tooth, You don't need to go too heavy with the sanding West. My rule is enough to take off the shine and you're fine.
I guess I should mention I always use 2K polyurethane clear, that's what my advice covers.
Wokka; I also did a cut and polish after the final coats of clear.
So, taking JC's advice, I gave 'er a light once over with 800 today ready for final sprays:

Then I sprayed:

Got it silky smooth, with no blemishes on the front. The back has a bit of gunk in it, so debating whether it is worth the hassle to remove it though. One minor spot to fix on the bottom edge as well, then clears are done!
This beastie should be wired and playing within a few days too! Excited! :D
Wiiinnnniiiinnngggg! That looks so damn good.
Just awesome dude. love the colours
Great finish from rattles man. Keen to hear it!
glad you are on the home stretch Brodie, looking great !
Looking amazing Brodie. Such a great finish! Can't wait to see this best strung up!
cheers,
Gav.
nearly there man, this is a beast!
Thanks, everyone. :)
OK, advice time again please.
I'm setting about putting the bridge bushings in, but I'm very worried about cracking the finish as they seem way too tight.
I started one, to see how it would go, and this is the result:

I'm terrified to continue, because if I ruin this finish I've worked so hard on, I may just cry.
What's my best course of action, from those who have done this before?
Slam it
:p
Do you have a round file, give it a little tickle, not too much, just so it can get started a little easier. If you don't, try some 80 grit rolled up and sort of spin it around in the bridge holes. How long has the clears been drying for?

Lookin' purtier already. ;)
Forgot to add a ground wire (flippin' idiot) but I managed to remove the bush, insert the wire, and replace the bush with minimal hassles. All told, it was a success.
Mate cant wait to see this assembled. Not a huge fan of mockingbirds but i do like this one.
Win. Looking like a beast.
You and me both, mate! Been a long time coming, but it'll be worth it.
Awww, Andrew! You always know just what to say. ;)
Got the wiring all done, and thankfully everything works:

And did a string test:

Then, the problem. Being a tune-o-matic means the neck would need relief, something it doesn't have. So, it was shim time. The neck also has some serious bow in the wrong direction, but I'm sure some of that will be rectified by full string tension and a truss adjustment.

Action very high at upper frets:

Went to my local Mitre 10 and they gave me a strip of veneer for free in order to do the fix:

Now I'm just waiting on a nut to finish this baby. Oh yeah!
Wicked. Almost there!
Woohoo! Looking great man.
Just gets epicer and epicer. If that's even a word
looking awesome Brodie and almost there. That photo close to the nut looks like its got a locking nut ? What style replacement nut are you using ? Looks like the black nut in the photo was the reason the strings were so high close to the nut
I don't normally like yellow, but I like this! Well done.
