Minister for Home Affairs said she liked it how it is but I couldn't help myself and had to give it another dark & sinister dose a couple of hours ago. Just had a sneaky peek a few minutes ago and it still looks wet and may have gone more dark chocolate brown? A slightly darker and more even tone is what I was aiming for and hopefully after another 24 hours that has done the trick.

Hi Simon, gave it an all over drink a few hours ago to address the uneven shade and hope it turns out more blended after a further 24 hours.

When wet, the difference in colour on the different wood blocks is certainly more noticeable on the black than the front. Another coating was definitely called for. If it remains more of a brown, then maybe you could try applying more tea stain over the rust stain to see if that turned it any blacker (you could test it on the neck plate area first)?
-
The missus advised me against going too much darker as that would hide most of the grain. I tend to agree with her as it has achieved the swampy look already, just more brown tones than black.
-
I wasn't sure if you were going to give it a wash with something else, maybe a weak bleach solution, or had planned to sand it back a bit?
-
Did a very light sand as the initial stain had shown up a couple of filler spots where one had swelled up a bit on the back. If it ends up too dark another light sanding should fix that up.

Plan B was an epic Fail!!!
Decided to add a bit of ink pad black ink just to darken things up a bit and oops, went way too dark. Evil stuff as I am sure it has some oily properties as it wouldn't dilute down nor wash off once applied. Took me 2 days to sand it all back to bare wood and start the whole process all over again.
Just the 1 coat of Tea and then 1 of the Vinegar solution and dry it looked unreal and was really happy however as finish was applied it went a bit darker but still OK. Here are some progress shots...
