Looking good Tony. Shame about the back.
Agreed, it's a shame about the back, but the front will look great when you're done!
That's another difference between yours and the PBG kit - there isn't a maple veneer on the rear (oops.. that rhymes...)
@wazkelly and Swanny
yeh guys pity about the back, but i am going to try a light black stain, then i can deepen it if needed, see if i can still get the grain to pop through the light black.
hi Tony,
soft application with a wire brush on those back glue stains then a touch up with dye may fix your problem. It will take a while and you should go easy, but I fixed a similar problem recently after dying. Alternately, (since this is just the initial popping step?), you can try some goof off on each spot an then re-apply the dye in those patches. I've had good results with the goof off as well. Just rub into the glue spot and rub out with a clean rag 3 times seems to shift most.
cheers,
Gav.
I've used Goof off on my 12 strings to remove the biggest glue spots too, just before I started the oiling.
As Gavin said it seems to remove a fair bit.
I was just careful around the edges and where the veneer meets in the middle as I was scared it could lift the veneer, but had no issue.
Fred
Thanks Gav and Fred
I tried some Goof Off on a spot yesterday, it didnt seem to do anything, not sure it isnt wood filler from the manufacturer, but i will try the light wire brush and some more Goof Off and see how it rolls.
This will surely make me gun shy of any future Chinese veneers, but you live and learn.
Maybe a Hofner style bass next without veneer :cool:
Tried some Red Mahogany Stain and its a no go, wont waste much more time on the back, solid black looks like the go.

Well i am now going for broke, i have dug out what is plastic out of one of the fill holes, got stuck in with some heavy sanding and goof off for a few other pieces, once i decided i didnt care if i go though the veneer or not, life has become much easier. The funny thing other than digging out plastic, i havent been through the veneer.......yet.
