Nice looking guitar BTW, and I commiserate with you on the lack of love the guitar got, but a vintage Ricky is going to be very hard to beat.

I have chrome parts on way so looks shouldn't be an issue.
I'll probably at end of project repaint the guitar a solid colour so carving out or filling in won't be a show stopper.
Switch, pots and jack will also be upgraded. After some study on how to wire it, if additional pots or kill switch etc is required that will be OK. I'll carefully consider your comments on coil tap.
I'm keen for any suggestions on pickup combinations no matter how unusual they may be. This project is primarily an educational trip as was putting it together in the first place. My wife has (guitar wise) moved on, I'd like to make it a personalized "go to" instrument so if it ends up with seriously different voices that would be a win.

Simon, she could knock out a tune when we teamed up back in 1969, I only started three years ago so when she looks at a guitar and suggests it should come home it does. She has some great stuff but the Ricky has become her number 1.

I'd just beware trying to add too many pickups, as each one adds a bit more magnetic drag on the strings. This can reduce treble and sustain. The Nigel Tufnel Musicman signature guitar with 4 humbuckers really didn't sound very good at all because of this.

How nice! If only all other-halves were so understanding. Mine is (mainly), but I do have friends who suffer from rampant GAS but aren't allowed to act upon it.
