You right there mate, i dont mind the mistakes as long as there is a fix for it and all this mistake cost me is $19au so i regard it as good experience. I just hate the wait for new parts, here in the country it takes weeks.Quote:

Hi guys, im nearly there, pickguard all done, switches in, wiring done, pickups sitting straight. BUT... i think my graphite nut is sitting too high, could someone check these pictures for me....cheers.. im not sure how high the string should be, though i like a fairly low action...Thanks in advance again guys

Hey Nitro, depends how deep the string slots are but it looks too high still.
Put the strings on, tune up and that will give you a better idea how far you have to push the strings down on the 1st fret.

Cheers, the slot depth is not very deep. i strung it up awhile back but it was very high. Will string it again and get some measurements. So is it best to file the slots or remove the nut and file off the underside?Quote:

You can normally file the slots on a bass guitar using needle files and a bit of care, but the thinner slots on guitar nuts need the right files.

That's very high. Definitely needs to be lower. It's the height over the 1st fret that matters and should certainly be less than 0.5mm, StewMac reckon on a clearance of about 0.15mm to 0.38mm from top E to bottom E. But you really need to check with all the strings on and up to tension. You can use feeler gauges to guide you.

But with that much slot to cut, I'd suggest filing the bottom of the nut first to take nearly 1.5mm off, then use the files to lower the slot depth from there, as they look pretty lightweight in the photo and look more suitable for fine work. But do the slot filing in-situ with the neck strung up and just the string on the slot in question loosened and pushed to one side. The string tension will pull the neck upwards, so if you try and slot it with no tension you'll end up with a bigger gap than necessary.
If done correctly, then you should hardly use any finger pressure to fret a string at the first fret. Obviously, loo low and you'll get buzzing, so it's a fine line.
At last.....It was worth it, im stoked, an original that no one in the world has!!!
