Cheeky looking butcher bird.
Day 4: Part 1
Lots of fiddly stuff done today.
Got the sound hole cut out, rough cut of the top minus the cutaway, and final thickness done at about 2.8mm. This will come down further when we do our final sanding before finish application

Added some cross grain spruce strips for the back join reinforcement.

Then added some side braces

Day 4: Part 2
More side braces

Building the x- brace. This was pretty easy thanks to Aaron's jigs.
This is radiused to 30'

The additional finger braces

And finally the bridge plate, no you can't have too many go bar rods on this!![emoji23]

Not sure if this quick video will work
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f9c63fb00a.jpg
Nope, didn't work. Anyway, Aaron wiped some metho over the timber to give an idea of how it will look under finish. Just stunning!!
So I am being a little pedantic with the cleanliness of the build which is really impressing Aaron, but its put me behind a little. One of the other guys closed up his box today and started working on the neck. The other guy will be gluing the top on his box tomorrow morning while I'm carving my braces. Still within our time frame though.

That damp section does show up the stunning bit of timber you have got to work with.
Doesn't look like any rain coming within next 10 days so hopefully that helps keep humidity in the right zone for you.
As you've left a small gap at the top of the rosette, is your fingerboard running all the way up to the soundhole like a classical guitar?
Cool.

Dammit, is it day 5 already??!!
Part 1:
Got out of bed a little earlier today and checked out Miami Beach. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b6928774fd.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...fb76131cda.jpg
Then learned I'm sitting at #8 on the Tassie charts with my single "Everything that Glitters", just ignore the title shown in the photo, it's wrong!
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...1167d0664e.jpg
First cab off the rank this morning was carving my top braces.

Day 5: Part 2
The braces get peaked to retain their structural strength while reducing the mass.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...20f7aeee03.jpg
Plus it looks nice!!
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6f39a93caf.jpg
Then I had to cut and carve out a heap of my Transverse Brace to allow clearance of the cutaway.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ba6753c687.jpg
And reinstall the sound hole brace

Dry fit after carving out a couple of slots in the sides.

Day 5: Part 3
Before gluing on the top, we needed to add a couple of struts to spread the sides a little. Due to the radius on the back, some sides like to push in after being removed from the mold. These struts are cut 90% off the way through so we can just snap them out tomorrow morning after the glue has cured.

Glued and clamped
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7d5ea1e4ec.jpg
Selected my fretboard and bridge timbers, this is Brigalow. Very hard timber, that splinters a little when sawn.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0228bf9244.jpg
Using a drop saw with a special blade, the fret slots are cut
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f495b7afb9.jpg
A little timber conditioner is applied and then using wet/dry sandpaper, the fret board is burnished to 1500 grit.

Day 5: Part 4
Neck will be made from Queensland Maple. The heel block is glued on and is ready to route for the 2-way truss rod. This will be adjustable from the neck, no through the sound hole.

Routing the neck

Aaron freehands the added space for the truss rod.

Lastly, my binding selection is East Indian Rosewood with w/b/w purfling.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...9f5acfb077.jpg
Tomorrow I'll be cleaning up the edges of my sound box and routing the edges to start on the binding.
Big day ahead tomorrow!

Shaping up nicely. :)
I'm flying with Jetstar, so basically the same thing. I ordered a Hiscox case, not the prettiest one in the market, but certainly one of the toughest. I'm hoping they'll allow me to gate check it, or maybe even have storage for it in these cabin.
Yep, I've been dreading the flight home!
I had pre-paid for oversize luggage with Jetstar on my return trip from Japan, I asked when checking in if my guitar could go in the cabin locker "no" but the website says it can "No". I'm sorry but the website says there is a 2m high locker suitable for musical instruments on this type of plane. "NO!" Obviously doing anything out of the usual is too much for Jetstar staff. The guitar arrived safe and well in its fender hard case but don't expect much from Jetstar staff.
Watching all of this with great interest.
You must be super happy with the way it's unfolding :-)
This shot shows great promise of what's just around the corner ...

Thanks man, most appreciated. today is being frustrating. The top and bottom had been trimmed to be flush, and the binding channels have been routed. I'm now working on the end wedge but it's being problematic. I just wasted 30-45mins shaping a piece to fit and I went less than 1mm too far. Start again!

Spoiler alert...this is going to be freaking awesome.
Day 6, The half way point!!
Part 1:
Today was more work on the body. Overnight, the top cured, even though I could have started something on it last night, I wouldn't have finished it. So it was best left till today.
After taking off all of the clamps, I left with this.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2c609ba22d.jpg
Then grabbing the hand router, I buzzed off the edges to get a pretty close edge. I played around with the binding direction for a teaser of what was to come!

Day 6: Part 3
Over to another bench to route out the binding channel top and bottom.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6d9927844e.jpg
Next step is carving out a spot for the end wedge. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...23d25b99fd.jpg
This is purely a decorative piece to cover up the join where the two side pieces meet. This was my second attempt after I mis-sanded the middle piece by less than 0.5mm!
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...9169650b28.jpg
Still a dry run to go over my options for how this section would all meet up. I had in mind to miter all of the corners to have it all flow together seemlessly, but I don't have the time to attempt that!
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c18f627fdc.jpg
Glued in place.

Day 6: Part 4
Finally binding everything!
I used too much masking tape for the top, using thin super glue, some areas were still tacky after being glued 20mins prior. I'd basically mummified the binding, not allowing it to breathe!!
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...9d88e5a983.jpg
Tackling the cutaway was tricky!

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...68c444dec1.jpg
End wedge should look good once cleaned up. Looking from this angle, the perspective is all wrong. There is not a major angle between the top and the bottom.

Before scraping
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...4abc551704.jpg
After scraping. I still have a lot of scraping to do on Monday, but I should be into the neck sometime that day.

Wow, starting to look like it should. Really like the subtle touches.
Thanks Waz, I feel like I should be further along, but the instructor thinks I'm going ok. One of the other guys has rough shaped his neck and cut the dove tail joint for it, and he is 3/4 the way through his neck carve. Having said that, he's built a lot of cigar box guitars, mandolins, bazookis etc, so he has a feel for it all. The other guy has started working his dove tail joint. Admittedly, I went the harder path with the florentine cutaway and solid wood bindings while they both used plastic bindings.
I'll get there no worries!

When is the finish line? End of next week?
Rest day today? Spare time to explore or work on your tan?

Haha, yep, got to get rid of this Taswegian glow in the dark whiteness!![emoji23]
I have an old school friend giving me a tour today. Heading to some massive market that's supposedly the biggest one in Australia. Surfers Paradise is on the cards, and depending on time, stopping off at his place.
