On the plus side I can confirm that that kit is super solid.
It could be “re done” a few times and not show any wear.

Cheers for the moral boost fellas. My main problem from the start with this one was that I was basically being a bit of a bull at a gate so to speak and not taking my time to think through the processes properly.
The plan is still very similar but im going to use the tru oil on the top this time around instead of the DT colorless. I still have a bit of sanding to do at this point. It took a fair bit of effort to take the clear off the top. Even after a few weeks it was still not cured under the clear as was pointed out in an earlier post.
I finished the 2nd round of sanding today and decided to start on the top with Tru-oil, 2 coats on so far.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2f6b0924c9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...fef34aeb6c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...97ebe2682e.jpg

3rd coat on and it really is looking nicer this time around.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...010366f9e5.jpg
Almost a goldtop without the gold!
Third coat made a big difference! It’s looking really nice.
Back on track! Looks really nice man.
Another coat of tru-oil and the first coat of DT base stain on this morning.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d603179547.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...8caf760245.jpg
Yeah....that is looking way better.
First intensifier coat on as well as another coat of TO on the top today.
I like the way the TO goes on and the finish it delivers.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2d4def2826.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...80f9137286.jpg
That stain on the back looks good. Nice colour and grain still visible. Compliments the top rather well.
Thanks waz. I really wasn't sure how it would look with 2 different finishes i was a bit skeptical to be honest but its coming together better than i thought. I started sanding the neck yesterday so I can restain it.
Matching the DT from neck to body might be a bit of a challenge due to the different timbers. I thought about just finishing the neck in tru oil but i don't think that would suit the guitar style so much.
Hi mate, suggest holding back on any more body staining as you may need what is left over to bring the neck up to a similar shade.
If the body has had 2 coats, neck will need 3 or maybe 4. Best to check for colour match after 3 and then decide if more is required. If neck goes darker than the body just add one more intensifier to the body. From memory intensifier doesn't seem to have as much colour strength as the base stain and could be used to slightly add a bit more of the same tint without going overboard.
Cheers, Waz
I finished sanding and prepping the neck this arvo and started with the 2nd staining attempt. Like the body its looking better this time around.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...55c1de4334.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ecc4e15a76.jpg
Yes, looking great. That scarf joint area on the neck is always a bad one for displaying variations in stain take-up .
It's actually end-grain (though cut through at an angle), so that area (plus the ends of the headstock) will always soak up a lot more stain. Very difficult to actually get the rest of the neck to look the same colour. The only way to do it is use tinted lacquer rather than stain, and even then, there is always a slight difference, just because the end grain always looks darker.
Probably also why the mid sections often appear lighter as if that section has done more work.
Three coats of stain down on the neck ill probably go one more before I go to intensifier. As for the body i put down 2 coats of intensifier on the back and let it sit over the weekend, today i gave it a light wet sand with 1200 and switched to Tru oil instead of using the DT final coat. So I have around 10 light coats of TO on the top so far and 2 on the back and sides.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f28248804d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d761a031d1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f2c4d3519b.jpg
Hi Grubsta, neck and body look a pretty close match. Like you say, one more stain coat on the neck may add just that little bit extra.
Getting there, the top is at a point now where I feel like anymore coats of tru oil would be pointless its come up really nice,it's nice and flat and glossy.
I'm still working through a few minor issues on the rest of the body.
The neck is proving to be a challenge color wise but i think I have it pretty close to the body color now. I know I'm probably not going to get an exact match due to the different timbers between the neck and body but if I can get it close ill be happy.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...87215aa18c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a85dbf5b6e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b7f13c0195.jpg
Once its together with all the hardware the differences will be less noticeable as well. Its looking really nice.
Looking great Grubsta, nice colours and finish you have there, suits the lp
Looks good buddy. Colour match is very close in that last shot. Front came up better this time around too.
That’s pretty damn sweet Grubby, great work!
Thanks guys. The body is almost finished. I have wet sanded the whole body and buffed the top its come up really nice but i ran out of buffing compound so ill get some more tomorrow and post more pics once I've finished buffing it up.
Body polishing done its not 100% perfect finish wise but im happy enough with it now. The kit humbuckers look pretty ordinary they have a few dings in them that i hadn't noticed until I removed the protective film off them but i was planning on upgrading them anyway so no big deal.
At this point I've just fitted some parts to make sure all is still ok until I catch up with the neck.
I'm currently trying my hand with designing my own headstock logo not having much luck with it though but ill get there.
This build has been challenging and has fought me almost every step of the way I've made plenty of mistakes but I've also learned a lot from it.
Not far to go now before I can wrap this one up.
Also my apologies if this diary has become long winded and a bit hard to follow ill try and keep the next a bit more on point.

Sharing everything is what makes the forum interesting to visit. It's only as good as the content being posted. I wouldn't worry abbot the length of it, its just great to be abel to follow along through the ups and downs.
Its looking pretty nice now, the finish has come up really well. Shame about the dings, but you probably won't even notice with the string on.
Thanks Sonic. So the body is pretty much done now. Despite all the hiccups its looking better than i imagined it would im glad I chose to stick with the cream colored plastics it just looks like it was meant to be. I was also worried that going for a natural timber finish on the top would not suit with the body color but again it just looks right.
It's fair to say I'm pretty chuffed at the moment.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...5ad96429a2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d31b7a005d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...dd05fda9b4.jpg
The finish looks great, really nice contrast between the body and the cream guards
this is SO nice. great work Grubsta
