Its hard Kick. I understand your pain. I've rushed a build before and vowed never to do it again. Its good that you exercise the muscle of patience.

Patience? That's what the second build is for, something to keep you occupied while first build is drying :D
Haha, you Aussies rock!
I might have some time tomorrow, yeah!! First I have to check the damage to our airco unit on top of the deckhouse (as said earlier, we live on a ship). Apparantly the last storm was to much for the outdoor unit of the airco and I noticed that the complete fan is blown the pieces. I have to check if it damaged the part behind the fan (where the cooling liquid is flooding thrue). If so then we have to go for a new split unit airco. If not, perhaps I can order a new fan and replace that.
And when I have done this I could give the Red Widow some lovely attention. Fingers crossed nothing comes in between :)
Update: the fan of the outdoor unit of the airco is blown to pieces and I asked the manufactorer by mail if they can supply me with a new one. Haven't heard from them yet...
And I had time to put on the first two coats of oil to the body and neck. After the first coat I waited for two hours to let it cure and applied the second coat. I waited about 30 minutes and then whiped it all dry. It looked pretty dry already but I did it just prevent any strange blodges or spots. She is starting to shine :)
Sorry to hear about your airco but happy to see you got some red widow time. I just finished wetsanding mine and now wait for full cure to cut and polish but I am posting some new pics and I sanded to 3000 and it already is looking good. Can't wait to see that red beast completed.
Well some good news on the airco; a fan will be shipped to me and hopefully I have the unit back on work before this weekend because there weatherforecast is giving tropical temperatures for saturday and Sunday...
I just checked the Red Widow and I can feel that the oil is not completely cured. But I guess that's ok because it is better to wait now and continue with the next coats around beginning of next week.
Perhaps I can start with the design of my own trusrod cover and print it on my 3D printer.
Where do you reside Kick? I know you said you on a boat and now tropical weather...you are making me jealous. I live in the mountains of West Virginia..
My wife and I live in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. We live on a small Coaster (think of the ships in Dealiest Catch) But believe me, if they predict tropical temperatures in The Netherlands it won't last longer than two or three days. After some thunderstorms with rain and hailstorms it's all over and are we thrown back into fall. Typically Dutch wheater ;)
Anyway, I designed my own trusrodcover and printed it with my 3D printer. Together with the spider I printed earlier it looks ehm... Well, it's ok but I do not know what to think of it.
Ok, pictures are better in this case. Give me a minute...

I think for such small items the print quality isn't high enough. Perhaps I can try some sanding to see if they come out somewhat better...
What do you guys think? Do or don't?
I like the look of the truss rod cover, but I think the spider seems a bit off. Is the printed plastic rigid or flexible?
I like it Kick.. the only thing I see is the back leg of the spider looks like it is need of repair. The truss rod cover is great but I would paint the wording in black or print it in black if possible. I know nothing about 3D printers. But you better be careful everyone will want a truss rod cover once they see what you can do.. I already do.. LOl
It is rigid and I also find the two a bit to much. Perhaps should I only use the trusrodcover?
The leg of the spider is a bit crackly indeed...
Nice!
I'd mask off a shape on the spiders body and then spray paint it gloss black and also spray paint the truss rod cover the sane colour and then lightly sand back the top of the letters. That will make the red the highlight on both rather than the main colour.
A light sand before painting would also even out the surface if desired.
The 3d printing has turned out really well though. Very impressive!
Thanks Drummerdude and Billb, I'm only a beginner in the 3D printing stuff.
I'm thinking of printing the trusrodcover again by printing it in two runs; first run is the cover itself, 2mm thick, printed in red (or black) and then leave the cover on the printboard. Next run will be printing the text and this text must be elevated 2mm (on the Z-axis) so that it will print directly on the cover.
For that I need to put down the exact location (the X- and Y-axis) of the cover and the text. If it is correctly set the print will be a red or black cover with reversed colored text.
Sounds like a nice experiment for a rainy day ;)
Better you than me Kick.. give me a hammer and wood I will build you something but give me a computer and a 3D printer and I will be on the phone with tech support.. I think the contrast of the wording will make it pop. Good luck
That's too cool Kick, I like the idea of the two colour print. It would be awesome to get some step by step pics as you go!
great trussrod cover Kick, I'll be putting my order in at the same time as Drummerdude. For me the spider is a bit much but it's not my build it's yours, if you like it use it.
Haha, thanks guys! I think I'll drop the spider so I can finetune the trusrodcover in two colors. Nice idea to make pictures so I'll do so and post them here.
Warm and humid here today, can't move without sweating buckets. Hardly any breeze, which doesn't help.
Unless you can inlay it, then the spider does seem a bit thick to stick on the headstock. You're obviously still getting the hang of the 3D printing, so don't feel committed to using your first attempts. I'm sure you'll refine things as they go along.
Just had to buy a new PC monitor as my almost 10-year old flat-screen seemed to have failed yesterday. New one came - plugged it in - nothing. Tried a new video cable - success! Not too fussed about getting a new monitor (instead of just a new cable) as it is bigger and sharper than the old one, but I was cut off from the internet (except on my mobile) until it came!
You are right Simon; I'm still in the learning proces of 3D printing as well as building your own guitar for that matter :)
Little progress; applied the third coat of undiluted Tung oil. I keep around a week of curing between coats so this is a slow process. But next week I will glue the neck in and create something to hang the complete guitar so it will be easy to continue with the coats.
One question; after how many coats should/could I start buffing? I have bought double zero steelwool but I'm a bit in doubt if this will be the correct stuff to use to buff...
It's normally 0000 steel wool for buffing.
I was afraid of that answer... Bummer! Ok, I'll find it somewhere ;)
Today I glued the neck in. I ordered a small bottle of glue with my kit and I used a little brush to apply the glue to the parts of the neck and body where they touched.
I made a block of wood with spacings to protect the frets and that worked pretty well:

I let it dry for almost 4 hours and this is the result:

Wow kick that is looking awesome. It is like a dark cherry burst and that is one of my favorite color schemes for guitars.. the end is near.. can't wait to see it all shined up.. great work..
Looking good Kick. I can't wait to see it finished and in action.
I have to say Kick - you've done really well here. There were plenty of issues with the finishing, but now it looks awesome - well done. Can't wait to see some gloss on it
Great job Kick. It's a monumental event getting the neck glued in. You're on the home straight and love the colour

this is going to be a great looking guitar Kick.
Wow. That red, with the black hardware... very nice.
Looking fantastic Kick! Very nice crisp looking edges at the binding really makes a difference!
Very tastefully done!
Man, that's looking dangerous. It looks almost more like an ESP shred machine with that headstock and hardware.
Hi Kick. You live on a boat?
I'm guessing it is fairly large based on your work space!!

Thanks guys for all the kind words! It sure was an exciting moment when I took of the clamp of the neck and body and I'm very happy with the result so far.
I have to make some stand to hang the guitar to dry when I have applied more coats of the oil.
And I have to say that I have only could have made it this far due to all your help, tips and advice. Thanks guys! You Rock!!
Looking great, Kick!
Must be a great when finally glueing the neck.
And that flame looks killer! A lot better than on mine, haha!
Looking sweet. It's a joy(but pretty bloody nerve wracking), when you get the neck on and see an almost complete guitar for the first time :-)
It's obviously not quite the Red Widow you started out to build, but it really is looking very nice indeed. Do you still intend to colour the bindings, or are you sticking with the white?
And how's the 3D printing going?
Good god that's a lovely piece of work right there.
