Wow !, looking awsome
looks unreal DK, love the combo of CG on the quilt and black stump on back and sides. This is gonna look choice buttoned up. So gold hardware is going on ?
Looking great Dave! The CG has come up a treat, but that Black Stump looks really nice. Highlights the grain on the back really well.
Looking good, Dave. The back looks dark enough. Plain black would be boring.
Well I'll be stumped (pun intended) as it seems really hard to get a dark shade of black?
Still looks good Dave and there is some nice grain poking through on the back too.
Cheers, Waz
I think the back looks fantastic, I wouldnt make it darker
I don't know whether this is the beginning of the burst or the beginning of the end :D
Started with CG with some BS added

will need some more massaging DK, Maybe you should have started with a thinner burst. It's important to really work the blend line when both stains are still soaking in. Next coat just try working CG and blend the transition
Thanks Woks, another lashing of straight CG is next on the agenda
I agree with Wokka; you'll need more blending with the stains. The color nevertheless, is wonderful!
should work out fine, you might find some very light sanding with a gentle grit will help blend - go easy though , you know how thin these tops can be
Gave the dog a gentle run over with a bit of 400 grit and it really tamed the BS stain, added another coat this morning with a bit of attention paid to the inner margin to stop it becoming a hard line.
I'll give it a few days to dry and then touch the edges again with something finer and hit it with another CG coat before letting it rest before the intensifier stage

What are your plans to feather the burst transition area a bit more? It does look a bit of a hard line at the moment.
There certainly are plans in place Simon and prior to the coat of Black Stump today the margin was very nice.
Having said that if you go back to the very first post you'll see it's not a traditional burst.
Next will be a light sand at the margin with another coat of CG before flatting off and intensifier
It's certainly not. The transition area is quite small and the outer area is very dark. Hope it all works out for you, Dave.
So do I Simon, but in saying that it's going to be a player not a show pony but I reckon I'll get a finish I'm happy with.
Given that I don't have the skunk stripe on the back to match the neck as per the original I'm half tempted to have the neck match the guitar, black on the back with a pale CG on the face of the headstock and of course the waxed maple fretboard ( maybe more alcohol is needed to work that one through )
Hey Dave, the dark neck with maple fret board sounds great but not so easy to do compared to a rosewood board as there could be some stain bleed under masking tape due to the maple on maple construction.
I'm hearing ya Waz, I think a lot of Coopers and red for medicinal purposes may be needed before I took that step :D
Just one of those things that wandered across my conscious the other day.
Another example of my odd thinking which I can't share at the moment is a song I'm working on with my "band" buddies, I threw them a progression in Dm and challenged them to come up with a song Max bless his heart came up with a very reflective piece called Brown Bottle.
As most on here am aware I generally live in the country music genre but this one has taken off in a different direction with the arrangement being predominantly organ & bass with a rather overdriven guitar solo, I found a really nice Hammond B3 / Leslie plugin and it's come up a treat. Long way to go before it is ready I want the vocals redone and need to add licks in the spaces but it has a nice smokey nightclub blues feel to it.
Max hasn't heard what I've done to it yet so it will be interesting to get his reaction. When we did the guide track he said I can hear steel in places here or maybe strings, little did he know
We're adding pedal steel to a few of our songs over Easter so when I have their blessing I'll share once mixed properly
Better wash the faded black T shirt so you are appropriately attired for the unveiling of their new song as it sounds like a flanny shirt might be a bit out of place with the dark tones suggested.
Thinking through the masking dilemma and reckon that if you put one fine coat of clear on the 3-5mm edge of the maple fret board top you should then be able to mask and stain with a bit more confidence and once dark bits are fully cured reverse the masking, lightly sand off the original clear if no longer wanted and proceed to finish off front how you intended.
Or you could attempt something like this....

If the fret board was masked the dark effect would have stayed on the back but for this build I wanted that dirty look all over. Easy enough to stop at the actual fret board level but that means you have to re-do the side fret marker dots.
Looking good on the quilt so far DK, cant wait to see how the burst turns out.
Sadly the burst was turning into bovine waste so once again has been sanded carefully back and the whole top is now CG.
I had been agonising over this for a few days and decided to bite the bullet, not going to meet the original vision but I think the end result will be better than where it was headed.
I don't think I'd try another burst on a quilted or flamed top, but never say never
Hey DK, I liked the look of the top being all CG so good decision. As long as you didn't sand through the paper thin quilt top !
It's very hard to get a good burst if you don't use a spray.
That's still an option if I have gone through the cap anywhere Simon, I have a good spray setup and both airbrush and detail guns for small stuff.
I would need to know what paint will go over DT stain and under DT top coat before making that decision.
Welcome back BTW
Just had a few days break down in Falmouth UK with some friends. Had two days of good weather, then two days of heavy rain - then a good day again when we had to come home. The friends down there had a 25' Folkboat and a 16' RIB. Sailed the yacht on the Friday then had fun in the RIB taking pictures whilst they raced, on the the Saturday, .
This is the yacht:

Falmouth is the one of the largest natural harbours in the world (somewhere between 3rd and 5th depending on what you read) and is normally very sheltered from all but southerly winds. Saturday just happened to have quite strong southerly winds (force 5-7), so quite a short chop built-up as the day went on, to make things interesting.
Don't take long to get punted off the front page around here.
Finally hit the dog with the first coat of intensifier, the CG came up like it had been nuked and the BS looks like intense BS :D
I have decided that the black burst on the top was fraught with danger so sanded it back to the CG under it, there are minute little flecks of black in the quilt that I am here to tell you were in the timber when I got the kit that it's not down to my incompetence ;)
Mandatory pics now taken, the BS actually looks darker and less translucent in the flesh.
The dark spots are where a forearm cut would be on a Strat and just below & behind the control cavity, the glaring black smudge at the back of the neck pocket will be under the scratch plate so I paid little attention to it when sanding back.

Dave that quilted maple has come up a treat! Love the colour. Really nice, deep pop on that figure!
cheers,
Gav.
Dont know if its the colour or the whiskey im drinking...but that quilt it just mesmerizing...:o
DK, that top looks like an inferno, so cool.
Might have happened 50 years ago Simon but not no more, a couple of beers or reds and I'm done.
It took a few years of portraying the rock & roll lifestyle complete with massive hangovers followed by a divorce to realise that a couple of drinks is good and many more is not better.
Next coat of intensifier will go on on Tuesday, I'll start the neck at that time so I'm doing final coats on both at the same time to help defuse the desire to rush the final stages
It is a very nice quilt. I agree that it probably is best left without any burst.
I wanted the burst rather badly but after two shots at it I wasn't convinced I'd get it right so here we are today.
I have enough CG stain and intensifier plus BS left to do some trial bursts on some pine so another body may be in order in the future.
Does anyone know if the DT stains dissolve the pvc tubing in an airbrush or alternatively will acrylic go over DT without problems
How thick is DT? My concern is that its viscosity might be too high to spray well unless you can find an easy way to thin it. My airbrush wouldn't spray nitro at all well from a suction jar - needed a gravity feed. I can't see it dissolving the tubing, through obviously it might take on a bit of stain colour. Again you'd need to know what solvent you can mix with it that will clean the piping afterwards.
I would guess that unless the DT is very dry, then oil/wax in the DT would stop any paint from adhering well or cause finish issues like puckering or orange peel. You can but try it on some scrap wood.
Being all natural products I thinks it's a safe bet that it wont eat tubing (I'm yet to find anything that does). Send DB a message and ask about what you can thin it with. What does it clean up with?
