Love some smoked rainbow trout - nice catch mate
wow that spalted top is looking like glass Andy
nice trout you caught too !
I'm loving the top of the LP! That's one fantastic finish evolving...
I just took my boys camping/fishing at Bribie Island on the weekend... didn't get to do any fishing, though, more 4x4 action instead.
Very nice spalt and trout :D
This just gets better, awesome job Andy.
Oh and what is your secret to getting away without the family? I need to know....
Good job on the spalt axe and an even better job having the family free fishing holiday! Nice trout.
not much to report...just listening to Rolling Stones and cleaning the binding while the kids are asleep.

Hi guys,
I think I got sent a left handed bone nut by mistake. You can see it alongside the plastic one in the pic. For all intents and purposes the nuts look the same except for the size of the slots.
Attachment 9470
I don't have any nut files, what should I do? is there a fix
Hi Andy, DB must have been half asleep when he sent it, the bone nut is definitely slotted for a lefty.
Send DB an email and ask for a righty slotted nut. He may want you to post the lefty back to him
there is no fix, you can't turn a 0.046" slot into a 0.010" slot haha
Play ambidextrous, i do :D
I see your point Wokks. I'll send him an email. Cheers.
Alright...well while I am waiting a right handed bone nut (thanks for sorting that out DB and Ads) I re-glued the plastic one, so I could fit my Klusons and set the neck!!!!

Yes....I've gone B&W to keep a bit of mystery with the colour effect....sorry Wokks
Ohhhh, looks nice, PM sent re lefty bone nut...
All electrics done. I am waiting for the day my luck runs out. This is the second kit I have wired from scratch and its worked first time.
Summary:-
Tonerider Alnico Classic 2's
all vintage cloth wiring
Switchcraft Jack
CTS vintage 500k pots
copper shielding
Gold toggle switch

Alright guys....stuff the black and whites....I need help....I really cannot decide...
Pickguard or no pickguard?
Attachment 9693Attachment 9694
I'd leave it off. Unless you put some gold text on the guard (kinda like Gretsch do)
Another off from me

First thing I did when I bought an Epi Les Paul was took off the PG. I hate 'em.
And why would you want to cover up ANY of that gorgeous wood?
Agree with everyone else to ditch the scratch plate as It would hide a big part of the spalt.
Looking good with the gold hardware.
Off for me
Based on those two pictures, I'm leaning towards putting the pickguard on. Might change my mind if the pics were of the whole body.
Agreed Frets, need whole body pics to decide.
Here's something from left of centre... What about a white PG?
Interesting idea Muzz. OK well today I've strung her up and checked the intonation. With the exception of the nut height it was good. Its well in tune with open strings and from 5th fret up and no buzz. Open chords sound bad. I reckon its the nut height. after fretting at the third I could drive a truck on the first fret wire!
I've de-strung and removed the nut. will sand it down to size, re-assemble and try again over easter.
I also got finger prints of glue on the finish after setting the neck so im going to have to sand back, maybe apply some more tru oil wait and re-polish in a few weeks time.
Once assembled in some state of a guitar I will take full body pics with and without the PG and see where we are at.
sounds good Andy you are on the home stretch.
When I glue set necks I put a heap of painters tape around the join and have plenty of clean rags to wipe any glue squeeze so it doesn't touch any part of the body or neck.
Update and Question
Ok, I've got the nut in perfect position and the guitar is intonated and works.
Except for the incessant hummmm. The hum goes away if I touch the switch or humbuckers and works perfectly.
I've wired the guitar in line with the Tonerider diagram (which is too big to load). The only exception is that its shielded with copper tape.
I did not ground it to the bridge because the diagram didn't say to do that.
I am guessing thats my problem?
Ground to bridge mate it also grounds the strings, that will be the problem.
I'll give it a got, thanks Tony
Ok so I looked everywhere for a hole in the control cavity that goes to the stoptail mount. It was difficult as I had already copper taped. I did find a small hole near the neck vol pot. however it did not go all the way through. As I already had installed the bushings I couldn't drill a hole like in Ads video with the SG.
Instead I drilled a hole from the bridge pup rout to the saddle mount hole. As the PBG bushings are hollow I fed the wire up through the bushing and soldered it on the bottom of the bridge mount then screwed it back in twisting the wire with it. I then fed the other end into the control cavity and soldered it to the pot to earth.
All I can say is it works so far!

Not much to go now. need to tweak a few things and final cut and polish and I reckon shes a goer.
good fix Andy, this axe is gonna look mega sweet when buttoned up and hope the missus allowed it to be displayed in the house - it will be a work of art !
Thanks Wokks, I'm prayin' to the guitar gods
Lookin good buddy. I hope to get the EX-1 finished this week too so I presume we will be up against each other for GOTM?
Andy thats the fix i was going to do on the 12 string but i ended up having to pull the bushing because the hole was in the rear cavity.
Looking good mate
Thanks guys.
Ok, after playing it for about a week, I'm finally happy with the nut height. had to re-seat it, measure with capo on 3rd, play it, take it off sand it, and repeat till I got there. I've eradicated the hum with the earth to the saddle, which is good as i was worried that when i screwed it in, it would break the solder join.
The intonation was spot on and I did not have to adjust the saddle distance. Its just how it came with the kit. I was surprised, grateful but a little disappointed that i didn't get to test my skillz. that being said I don't like my saddle height, it needs to go down but I'll do that on the final set up.
Couple of things I don't like:
1. Volume. It works fine. Its just not a really high output machine compared to my other LP copy. That being said I've got 10's on the other and 9's on this one. That may be the issue. Both have got Alnico 2's (wilkinsons in the other and Toneriders in this one) and the humbucker height is fine. My best guess is that its the difference in string guage or my soldering efforts are creating resistance?
2. B string It sounds a bit sitarish when acoustic (not amplified). Its not fret buzz, the string's no where near the fret board due to my too high saddle. I've got a DB bone nut in there. I'll check the slot when i de-string but it looks good to me. I think its just a "dead" string? They're not the ernie balls just the PBG strings.
Any way subject to any advice, she's ready to be stripped down and polished. yaaaay.
FINISHED!
Epic build for me and a huge exercise in patience. Five months and 10 days. This was always the guitar I wished i had. So even if the wife doesn't allow me to hang it in the lounge, I still win!
Last touches done. I ended up replacing the PBG bridge with one of these http://www.realparts.com.au/bridges-...idge-gold.html. If anyone doesn't know the measurements fit perfectly in the factory bored post holes and PBG bushings. The bridge is slightly fatter but doesn't buzz as much.
Still trying to get the intonation perfect. Its close. I'll see if I can get a sound check done for you guys.
