Did you run a ground wire to the bridge post?
Yeah mate. I don't have the strings attatched yet, will that make any difference?
If you can't find the fault, post up some pics of your wiring and we'll see if we can spot anything.
Awesome thanks mate. I have a slight feeling I may know what the issue is but I'm probably wrong. I ran out of the wiring supplied with the pb kit so went to jaycar and got some 3mm electrical wire. They didn't have speaker wire. Could this be the cause? The only thing this wire is used for is the long run from the 3 way to output and grout output earth to tone pot. Also when I touch the output Jack plate it goes silent.
Shouldn't be an issue mate. As long as it conducts electricity you should be fine.
It's definitely a ground somewhere. Take a pic of the cavity/your output jack and we can help you diagnose a bit better. Make doubly sure that your solder joints are all good (no blobs/balls/dull).
This'll be an easy fix mate no worries!
Thanks mate. I'll go over everything tonight and tidy up and straggly bits and see how that goes.
make sure you have wired the output jack the right way around, i suspect that may be the issue
Thanks for the reply. Tried that last night and same issue, stacks of buzz that disappears when I touch a metal part, especially the Jack plate. Gonna rewire it later tonight but this time I'll use a 3mm wire of each pot to sum all eartha to a common point. At the moment there is 3 spots on the tone and 2 on the volume serving as earths.
Just finished rewiring the whole guitar. Unwired everything, cleaned all the terminals and started again with common earths on each pot and waddayano. Silence! Now tomorrow night will be screwing in the tuners, truss cover etc, oil up the neck and then time for some drop b riffage. Only down side is I used the wiring loom thing from the untouched ib7 in the studio. Is that vintage cloth stuff any good?
Good news. Sounds like you're on the home stretch. I like the 'vintage cloth' wire, not because of any tonal reasons, but it seems to stay where you put it, eliminating most of that feeling you need a third hand. And no fiddly stripping wires.
Ok awesome. How much do you reckon I'll need for a 2 humbucker 1 volume kit?
So all the hardware is installed except the backing plate for two reason. It a too big and the electronics are still giving me gremlins. But when it works it sounds great. Getting a lot of buzz at the first fret though.
Like the nut is too low?
Nah maybe too high? There is a huge gap from nut to fret board, bridge is all the way in and the action is still pretty high
Solved one gremlin, plugged in everything is noise free, switches all work and coil tap works beautifully. The initial gremlins was a problem with the three way, replaced it for a spare I had and all peachey. But in testing, the tone knob seems to be not toneing. Hmmmmm. Breaking out the soldering iron again.
Andrew, make sure the capacitor on the tone pot is making good contact with the lug and obviously grounded on the back of the pot
Don't you just love guitar wiring?
agreed Pablo, wiring is great when you pull it off first time, its the diagnosing the problem that is a real pain. Think it would be the least favourite part of the build for everyone other than Lozza and Weirdy !
Mate love is the polar opposite to what I feel right now haha. If it's just a simple solder job ill be happy. I'm saving putting the logo on til its all set up and working well. Kind of like the final seal I guess. Seeing as I've had so many dramas with decals etc I've got a sign writer making up a stencil of the logo. That way I can spray it, the stencil is reusable and the final product is thin as, won't react with clears and won't silver on me.
I'd probably be spraying your logo on now Andrew so you have time for it to cure and get a clear coat or 2 over it to protect it
Not gonna worry on this one mate. She's no gotm. Basically this was a great way for me to learn how to put a guitar together and she is no means perfect. A few knocks and scrapes, a spot on the back where the solder landed. The decal for this is a vinyl print. I'm happy that it plays and sounds nice. Cosmetically there is room for improvement. I got a Tele kit ages ago, not sure from where, that I've stripped, and timbermated today. I bought a compressor and paints to do it properly. Rattle cans just don't give you the control. The Tele is kind of the test for finishing techniques as the ex was an all round test to get in the swing of things. The Tele will be candy burnt orange, white painted binding, marbled sides and a natural neck and head stock.
So after these two I should hopefully be armed with enough skill to get into the two ib7s. The first is the stock one, candy red over marble front and a black burst with an airbrush, black sides. The second is 27" with a tuneomatic and quilted top. Gonna stain this one but not sure on colours yet. I really want the ib's to come out a million bucks and will take into the build all the lessons I have learnt along the way.
cool you have big plans Andrew, yes you will find each build you learn a bit more and improve on the build quality
That IB sounds awesome dude. Delivery in Nov/Dec?
Thanks guys. Adam says delivery October/november but maybe sooner.
Looks like you and I will be building IB7s around the same time mate. ;) I've got an ib7 with hardtail, veneer and maple board on the way for late nov/dec. :D so excited. Will be a nice xmas/end of uni present!
Awesome Mate. There needs to be more pb 7 string gurus. What are your plans with it?
dark purple trans finish, waxed board with no stain (purple -> white contrast hnngh), black back and head stock
What about you man?
That's gonna be epic. For the standard one it'll be black back and sides, black and silver marble top with candy red and a black burst, same job on the head stock face and natural neck. For the hard tail baritone it'll be stained but no idea what colour yet. Tossing up a stained silver burst but still not sure.
Sweet man. Marbles are rad. I was actually thinking about a swirl but I just don't have the practice/facilities to do one.
Will see you on the battlefield :P
Yeah man swirled ibbys look rad as. I'd love one except I don't play with sunnies on, with a fan in front of me and in no way have the chops to play it. I'll leave that to the shredders out there.
Question regarding set up. I've leveled and crowned the frets, came up pretty good with the triangle file. Sanded down the bottom of the nut and the 1st fret buzz has disappeared. Problem now is even with the bridge screwed all the way in the action is still a bit high. Not slide high but not as slinky as I'd like. Would it be worth taking more of the nut? At least if it's too low I have miles of play in the bridge.
This was the advice I got on nut hight and it worked a treat using a set of feeler gauges.
StewMac taught me how to do this! They have a very fancy tool that basically uses a feeler gauge to prevent you from filing too deep, but more importantly to get the nut slot depth perfect!
So for proper string nut slot depths, use a feeler gauge.
Here are the steps involved:
1. Measure the height of the first two frets by laying a straight edge across them and sliding different combinations of feeler gauge blades under it until they touch the straight edge. Record this measurement (let's say 1.0mm fret height).
2. Add 0.15mm to 0.25mm (or the figure you come up with after experimenting) to this measurement. New total: 1.15mm or 1.25mm (the 1mm frets, plus 0.15 or 0.25).
3. Stack a combination of feeler gauges equaling the total measurement (I'm going to stick with 1.25mm as the example), and hold the stack down against the fretboard and up against the front edge of the nut. Now continue filing away at the nut until your file makes contact with the gauges.
Once the slots are properly spaced and filed, the nut can be shaped and finished with some confidence. Always good to sand down the top of the nut to eliminate any excess slot depth. The slots should be only deep enough so 1/3 of the string is above the top of the nut and 2/3 in the nut.
Hope this helps!
Mate that's perfect. Thanks so much.
No worries mate but credit goes to Gavin1393 for the info. Such a great wealth of knowledge here hey.
If it wasn't for all you guys I'd still be figuring out how to open the box! Honestly I can't thank this community enough, for this thread and the millions of others with noon questions.
And I'll upload pics in Wednesday in the daylight.
She is finished! Just got to give it a polish, intonate it and take the nut down a bit more but otherwise buil 1 is done!

Trying to upload body photos but getting a server error. Will try again later
If you upload to Imgur you can just copy the BB forum link here and you can avoid the servers. :)
Hope to see you riffing on this man! Not many metal heads around here :P
Body shots
Will be doing a vid as a test run using my phone but I'll record a song properly using just this axe and a bass and stick it up on soundcloud. Had it in drop Ab last night. These pups seem to suit drop tunings better than standard. They have a cool mid range djenty snarl that when tuned to a standard has a single coil spank.
