First stage of staining done. Next step is to sand it back to just leave the grain stained then re-stain. Hopefully this helps pop the grain. Won’t be pink, hopefully wine red...

It’s all an experiment at the moment. If the grain doesn’t pop as I hope I’ll stain it black and sand it back before final staining.
Good fun, Robbo

I added some blue to the mix and applied 2 more coats. I have spray on poly ready to go as I have a seven day break starting Thursday...

Pretty close. And 'wine red' isn't an exact colour. It should go a bit darker with the clear coats on.
I'd just give it a very light dry sand with a fine grit paper to remove the standing up wood fibres causes by the staining before spraying. Just pull it along the surface, no real pressure.

I wasn’t sure as I was laying on the spray on poly clear as the guitar is a fair bit darker than I was expecting but I quite like it now. I’ll let it cure, give it a light sanding then more coats of clear. Thanks for checking it out.

Thanks Dedman. The more I look at it the more I like it... it’s a real deep colour.

That colour got much better as it went on:cool:

Looks great. Clear changes everything. This will look great once you build up the top coats a bit.
The longer you let it dry the better the final finish will be.

Thanks all. The first 5 applications of dye was just red with a touch of black then when that was dry I put a smidge of blue in and put another 3 coats on. I still wasn’t sure but after 5 coats of the gloss poly I think it’s come up nicely. I didn’t grain fill so I would get a nice textured finish which is what I got. I’ll let it cure for a week or two then sand and bang on some more top coats.
