Camphor Laurel ftw, looks great with the dash of oil.
Thanks for the comments guys.
So today thought would have a crack at a neck for the build. Marked out with template and made own headstock design and then routed for truss rod (with a few hiccups) drilled the headstock holes and drilled one wrong. Drilled out to 10mm (will fix dodgy one tommorow).
Rough cut out on the bandsaw ready to trim against the template.
So after flush trimming the neck, routed the headstock thickness down to 16mm to near final dimension. The main tip for this is to have decent router bits, I did not and was painful to get done. ( Cheap Bunnings set)
So after final shaping the head thought I would do an insert of the body wood into the headstock. Thin sliced a camphor body offcut on the bandsaw and then routed the headstock with a dremel for the insert.
Glued the insert in. Hoping that the camphor will glue nicely and not have and issues
Adjustment from body end on that one Tony? What is your fretboard going through be?
Hi FW yeah body end due to the type of truss rod. (lucky i checked before routing) Requires a reamed hole for the nut end that wouldn't work without a major gouge through the headstock. Will work ok the other way with angled headstocks. Fretboard will be ebony and trying to think of something to inlay at twelfth fret.
Nice shape on the headstock and the camphor insert is a cool addition. Are the 5 & 4 tuner holes both slightly off in opposite directions, or is the one making both appear askew?
I wish those Makitas had a touch more precision with their depth adjustment, it's always one tooth either side of what I want, good little units otherwise.
And, mate... those toes will scare small children.
+ 1 from me on the headstock inlay too.
Keenly watching how this turns out Tony. Way beyond my skill set and tool collection too for that matter.
Cheers, Waz
So filed and sanded to shape and pretty happy how it turned out- just have to try and fill the slight line- maybe some superglue and sand over it.
Weirdy, think its only the one hole but will check when I fill.
And thanks a lot for crushing my dreams of becoming a foot model.
That made me laugh.
I'm sure there are some 'specialised' foot sites where your toes would go down a storm, Tony. ;)
All looking very good and I'm sure you'll fix the errant headstock hole to perfection.
Just a thought but could you do another camphor insert over the six holes to cover up the patching up, if only on the top? I was thinking of a general Tele control plate shape.
