It is not something done to unsealed timber.
Ash is a very open-pored timber which requires grain filling IF you wish to achieve a smooth, glass-like finish (like you would see on factory produced guitars). Lots of builders (here & elsewhere) choose to not grain fill and go for, what I refer to as a rustic finish, where you can still see and feel the grain. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. One reason for using grain filler to, well... fill the grain... is it will take a stupid amount of paint or clear coat to fill those grain lines enough to get to that flat smooth appearance, and that much paint/clear will take almost literally forever to cure.
Much as I like the glassy finish, I think I actually want to go for a rustic finish like you suggested. So in that case I won’t be doing the grain filler.

Yes, it is looking good. The grain is very nice.
Well I don’t have a workbench so I used the next best thing, which was an old disused kennel I built for our cat a few years back. I don’t know if she ever actually used it! I took all the walls off and decided it would work as a nice little table to attach the bass to while I stained it.Quote:
