However I'm pretty confident the Safe-T Planer will work fine. Especially with pine. I've done a 4mm pass on Tassie Oak just experimenting before, and it went through like butter. Most I've taken off of rock maple is 2mm, but again, easy peasy.
I reckon multiple passes with the Safe-T-Planer followed by a belt sander and I can create a very level blank to work of off.

Manufacturer says planer cuts 1/4 - 3/8" (6.35 - 9.5mm)
