bummer Doc, sounds like the only place in the country you can paint a guitar is WA, although we had a bit of rain yesterday but I got a clear coat on my end grain pine tele Monday its getting a nice gloss finish
Weather on the way into winter here is deteriorating rapidly too..... Looks like I'll have plenty of time to sand.....
The good news is that I did manage to spray a touch-up coat of Gold Paint on the body yesterday and didn't get any paint runs at all, it seems to be coming along pretty well now, I reckon two more coats of the Gold Paint and then once the last coat has dried it'll be ready for clear coating.
sounds good Doc, any pics ? Sounds like you are getting better at the spray technique and when to stop !
To be honest, I don't know what I did right this time round, but whatever I did seems to have produced good enough results, unfortunately I still can't seem to locate my digital camera and my Galaxy Y phone doesn't really produce pics that are of good enough quality to see the results I'm getting, but I guess I could take some pics with it anyway, it'd be better than nothing at all, there are a couple of small indentations in the front of the body which are not far from the bridge route, I've decided not to worry about them.
I'll see if I can organize a couple of pics to post a bit later on.
no hurry on pics Doc, I'd say your spraying technique has improved and you have learnt better to stop spraying before you get paint runs. I have found I am still improving my painting technique looking up and down the body at different angles to see how much paint has been applied and looking for areas light on and avoiding areas that are heavy
It's probably same like learning to ride a bicycle, or anything else, anyway, here's a couple of pics that I took of the body "as is" a few minutes ago with my Galaxy Y phone, not the best of quality, but it should be good enough to give you an idea what it looks like now, personally I'm happy enough with the results I got, I reckon just a couple more coats of paint and then onto the clear coating:
Here's what the front looks like, notice the two small close-together divots, I'm not going to worry about them, I'll call it custom relicing:

The thing I've noticed most about the White Knight Super Gold paint that I've used is that it is quite prone to tarnishing if you so much as touch or wipe the surface with a finger, it must have copper in it, or a copper based additive or pigment, since copper tends to tarnish if you touch it with your fingers, that's something I'll have to be careful of till the surface gets clear-coated.
Update:
So the plan now is to just let the paint on the body dry for a couple of weeks before I even think of applying any more coats, it would be a shame to end up having to sand it all off and start again due to a paint run, since I'm this close to getting it to the point where it's ready for the clear coats, I've got enough things to keep me busy anyway.
getting there Doc, if its humid and wet there probably a safe move to leave it cure for a while.
Yep, I agree mate, looking back at last year I reckon a lot of the trouble I had with the first few coats of Gold Paint were most likely due to the weather we were getting at the time, which was a bit humid come to think of it, so this year I'm going to make sure I give the paint enough time to dry properly, I've got plenty other guitars to play in the meantime anyway.
you made it to page 130 Doc, that record will be very unlikely broken !
The main thing as you have learnt alot from your past painting experience Doc. If you have any paint questions the new member Guvna has 30 years experience, building the DIY lap steel
Cheers mate, will do, I'm just imagining what the Gold Strat is going to sound like played through my Fender Super Twin amp head once it's all sorted out with a speaker box, and it's had some TLC work done to it, should sound pretty good.
That Fender Super Twin amp is rated at 180 Watts RMS of pure valve power, makes my ears ring just thinking about it.
sounds good Doc, you can crank up that 180 watts when there is a domestic outside your unit, that should kill the sound of arguing hahah
Absolutely, all I'd need to do is point the speaker box in the right direction, crank it up to max, and then strum the most bone-jarring Death Metal power chord riff I can think of and let it fade away into screaming feedback, I'd call it my Super Weapon of mass destruction, it'd be sure to really annoy the people arguing outside cause they are all into bad HipHop music.....*lets out a long evil-sounding laugh*...revenge on them will be sweet.....lol.
haha thats it Doc, even if the guitar is badly tuned - or grab a slide bar and flick it on bridge pup and play the highest notes you can with your Dr Evil face on hahah
Yep exactly...lol...out of tune-ness in that case will actually be a big bonus in making the generated noise even more irritating to the people arguing outside my flat, and if they complain about it then I'll say to them "Now you know how annoying your arguing is to me", hopefully they'll get the message and move on to some other place.
I'm sure DB would agree, since he was going to use a similar tactic to deal with some noisy neighbors, speaking of DB, I've notice that he hasn't been in the forum much lately, I'm guessing that he's been a bit busy, which is understandable, hope he's okay healthwize.
He did mention that he'd had some 'unexpected issues' over the Christmas period and the first part of this year that were taking his time up. But seconded on hoping he's OK.
yep, hit me with any paint/stain questions.
been with Solver / Wattyl / Valspar for 19 years / + 10 yrs as painter decorator
workin with the paint chemists last 8 yrs and still learning - aint no know it all - but learned a fair bit
if i cant answer honestly, i can/will ask industry colleagues across the globe

I think the Gold Paint on the body still needs more time to dry, since I can still smell that chemical smell, I think it was Dingobass that said that if you can still smell that chemical smell, the paint still needs time to dry, so maybe in another week's time it may be ready for another coat of paint.
I just reviewed this thread doc, 131 pages, 1300+ comments and 42K+ views! EPIC!
Update:
So, the body of the Gold Strat has been drying since the last coat of Gold paint was sprayed on it, and since I have successfully managed to fix my old Canon A480 digital camera, I'll see if I can post a couple more pics of it, hopefully they will be of better quality than the last two....stay tuned.

I'm actually really liking that shade of gold, it looks a bit greener than Aztec Gold (which is what Fender used on their Gold Strats), which is a bit more yellow in colour.
Oooooo shiny.
Looking nice Doc! Almost there!
My first thought is 007's Goldfinger ;)
Nice goldie Doc, looks great - looking forward to seeing it dressed up
One more post to keep this thread growing ;) looking good Doc!
Sent from Lineage OS 14.1
It's more of a slightly aged Gibson Gold Top gold.
Which I'm assuming will probably darken a bit when I spray clear coat on it.
I think I've given the last coat of paint enough time to dry so Monday of next week is when I'm going to be giving the body another coat of Gold paint, hopefully I won't get any paint runs or anything else that needs fixing up.
Champion effort Doc. This build thread is like a marathon and no doubt you will take out the gold medal.
Gold looks great doc
Cheers mate, it's taking it's time but I reckon it'll be worth it in the end, as the saying goes "Good things come to those who wait", I've had to postpone spraying a new coat of paint on the body due to the wet weather we're getting, apparently there was a cyclone warning for Darwin because a category 1 cyclone had formed near the Tiwi Islands, but the warning has since been downgraded, we're still getting rain from it though, been raining since early this morning, it's good since it has cooled things down a bit.
Postponement means some extra drying time too.
I'm just going to see if I can get a quick "mock-build" pic sorted so you can get a bit of an idea what the guitar is going to look like when it's finished, will post the pic once it's sorted....stay tuned.
Here you go, hope this gives you a bit of an idea what it's going to look like once it's all finished:
