My first PBG TLA-1 build

I did a little more to it tonight, shaped the headstock, applied more paint to the body.

I’ve only used one spray can. Would you advise I get another and apply more coats?
When it has dried should I be lightly sanding with 800 grit then eventually apply the clear coat?

Might be best to leave neck unfinished until re-fret job has been done as you may want to seal the fret board too and thus make it trickier to remove frets if done first.

So I think I have put my final coat of paint on the body, I’m very happy with the colour.
Is my next move to fine sand it with those 2000 grit pads from Repco then apply the clear coat?

If you have ever owned an Alfa Romeo you would know what I mean......basically all cars were blessed with having rust added at no extra cost.....direct cause was more likely crap soviet blok steel used in their bodywork.

No I haven’t owned one of those but I have owned a Talbot Horizon in the UK which had similar issues [emoji15]

Due to salting the roads during winter, most cars of that era probably suffered the same fate.
I remember a mini clubman estate that had to visit the wreckers due to the floor pan disintegrating.

Risking going even further 'off topic' but my 850 T3 Moto Guzzi seemed to shed chrome way too easily.
Noted that the 850 leMans didn't seem to have an ounce of chrome on it.

Being a beginner like you I have no idea - I hope you can work it out though

I had been thinking that if mine turns really bad in patches it can always get some relic-ing done on it and I can say that was my plan all along

Oh boy. This is nitro right? I haven't used it before so not 100% sure but that looks like a bit of pigment that wasn't fully mixed in, putting the clear on may have 'reactivated' it and brought it to the surface. Annoying, but not super noticeable.

Yeah sounds about right, it’s reactivated something I think I’m going to leave it and carry on. Gonna leave it all this week, sand it back just a little and apply the rest of the can. Then leave to cure for a few weeks.

Did you use the colorspec for both the colour and the clear?? The colourspec is an Acrylic but Sonic's comment about Nitro made me wonder whether you had used a different brand for the colour and ended up mixing a Nitro colour coat with the Acrylic clear coat.

I used the same colour spec brands.
Although I sanded back the clear on the same day because of 0000 wool in the clear coat, I then sprayed again in the afternoon. I think that is where I came unstuck. I should have left it another day, it caused a reaction somewhere.

I can safely say this Tele will be unique [emoji16]. And it will be all mine, it won’t be perfect, but it will be mine to play. [emoji16][emoji450]

Yeah I think I got it confused with another build and was too lazy to scroll back through the thread. I haven't used that brand either, so not sure. Anyway, always a pretty steep learning curve on your first build.

That would be my guess as well. It's one of the perils of rattle can finishing IME.
I've had it happen and the only fix I found is re-spraying it. You don't need to sand it all the way back, just shoot the base colour over it, then re-coat with your clear.
It can be done as a spot repair but that can be tricky with spray cans. I did it once by re-applying the colour coat in the affected area; levelling it out with 1200; then re-spraying the entire thing with my clear.

Like I said, it *can* be done, but not always easy.

That'll be 2 cents, please :)

No pics today but I’ve had a crap weekend painting my guitar body.
Applying the final clear coats to it and I kept getting foreign debris in the finish. I had to keep sanding it back and went too far, totally screwed it.
So sanded it all back both sides, bought more paint and sprayed again yesterday 3 coats. I’m going to leave this now as we are off camping next weekend to white gum farm. I will then try the clear coat one more time after that. It will be what it will be, I’ll turn it into a relic if I have to. Oooossaaaa [emoji3262]

Been a while since I’ve posted due to work commitments.
This post has been a worts an all so far so here goes.
After my clear coat failures I decided to tru coat it. I tested on some timber and it worked out well.
On the guitar body not so well, due to the large surface area the application over the paint shows up. Of course the replies will be obviously cause it’s paint, it doesn’t seep into the wood. But on my test it was perfect.
Anyway I decided to carry on and see what happens. This is all a learning process for myself and others in the future who read this.

It does have a nice shine, but in certain angles you can see where the tru oil has been applied. Even though I used little pieces of lint free cloth it still did not come out lint free. I even used 0000 wire wool that smoothed a little bit on the next application it was back. So I can still feel little bits of lint.

Moving on I’m now in the process of slowly putting this guitar together. Can I also say that putting on the copper shield is not as easy as you think it is.

Had a big day today, finished soldering and put the whole thing together. It’s not perfect but I’m very happy so far.

It doesn’t sound like anything yet DarkMark, the strings aren’t that tight yet. I’d spent most of the day on it and I was starting to get vibes off the missus so I quit while I was ahead. I’ll try to tune it in the week but I have a busy work week with bosses coming over from the eastern states [emoji3525].
At least it’s built now which I’m happy with [emoji16].

Yes it is mate, Tru oil all the way. I think I used 240 initially as there were machine marks on it. Then went to 800. I then just coat with Tru Oil and waited a day them 0000 wire wool if I could feel bits, rinse and repeat. I did the same with the headstock.
