I was going to keep the headstock blank but after joking in reply to trv that maybe I should have Patience on the headstock I did a little bit of messing around in Illustrator to mock up what a headstock logo could look like and just printed it on white paper for now. What do you guys think?

Talk about a test of perseverance. Anyway I got the wet sanding done (with a couple tiny spots where the wood expanded unfortunately but in spots that'll be hidden), I went 1000, 1500 and then 2000. And I've started polishing. I'm actually using the same applicator pads and meguiar's as a_novice and I'll admit it is hard going when polishing by hand. I still have a lot more to do to get the fine scratches from the 2000 removed but here are a couple of progress shots.

Yeh, I figured that I'd require a number of layers so the transfer felt like it was flat on the face of the headstock. My plan is actually to put a few more layers over the whole neck, not just the transfer.Quote:

However many layers you put on, there's always going to be a bump as it will follow the contours of the decal, so add enough layers to be sure that the surrounding area is several layers higher than the decal surface. Always be very gentle when fine sanding/polishing over the decal area.

Still a lot of polishing to do (including removing some of my swirls from pressing a little too hard...oops) and some slight work on the pickguard. There are two chips on the body, one on the edge of the bridge pickup cavity and the other on the edge of the neck cavity. Fortunately they'll both by covered when everything is assembled so I won't bother trying to do anything with them.
That looks the goods. Would definitely speak to me if I was in a music shop looking for ways to part with my hard-earned.

Well another facepalm moment. I must stop working on the guitar when I'm tired.
I was looking closely at the neck, in particular the fretboard and realised the truoil had picked up a heap of dust n rubbish next to the frets when I had applied it previously.

I thought no worries I'll just give the fretboard a bit of a buff and it'll clean it up ok. Then came the D'oh moment. The buffing picked up some material from the frets and dirtied the fretboard, embedding fine material into it. So I've started trying to clean it up by carefully sanding the fretboard between each of the frets. Here is an example of it material still left in the fretboard after I've sanded a bit.

At that point I made the decision that I'm done with the tru-oil, I'm not happy with the finish. It's getting sanded off...

Well I've started sanding back the finish to do it again. I've also decided given the effort I'm going putting in to get the finish I want on the body, that I'd use the time to do a couple things to the neck. There are a couple of chips on the fretboard that I'd been ignoring from the start and when I managed to dirty the fretboard by accident when I polished it and the accumulation beside the frets from the original tru oil finish....things escalated.

I've got a radius sanding block coming from Adam and I'll sand the fretboard and refret before finishing the neck with tinted lacquer.
The paua dots look fantastic. I’ve got some sitting here for my es-1 build but haven’t got around to it, Cheers for the inspiration 👍🏻
That does look a little bit special. I’ve never seen paua against maple before, nice.
Just catching up on some threads and sympathise with the challenges you have faced. None of my builds have gone to plan and quite often ended up with something totally different to what I had in mind.
In the end they are only perfect for a short while and once you start playing them they develop dings and scratches anyway. Don't beat yourself up too much as whilst we all strive for perfection by aiming for something that looks good, how it plays and sounds will be far more important in the long run.

Also easy to mark up while using the fret protectors in the buffing.
Wears quite quick too. Far better to seal it with a couple of layer of laquer set really hard.
