Nice looking!
Love the headstock veneer. The rest is coming up a treat as well.
I've alway found these tailpieces more interesting and reasonably cheap:
Ahh, tailpiece....now I get it haha!!! Looks more L1 or L2 though.
Good one Stan! Waz - thanks for that the penny has just dropped, a bit of a slow day today!
Love the natural finish Andrew! She's looking amazing already.
cheers,
Gav.
Cheers Gav.
So on with the neck. Same technique as the body, tru oil sanded in for each sandpaper grade then rubbed off with a rag. Up to 320 grit. Will stop at 400 grit then a few 50/50 tru oil/white spirit coats to finish off. Then neck glueing yay!

Hi Ponch, I trust the tuners will hide plugs on the rear of the headstock?
Liking the natural nude finish.
if it needs a home when you are done....😁😁😁😜
So Waz, being the the type of person I am there is a very small piece of plug visible on one of the bottom tuners. I was going to let this go but now on a mission to get this build as good as I can get. I've agonised over the solution to this and have since located a nice piece of flame maple veneer from my stash that will cover the back of headstock & do the job. Just working on the template shape then a bit of thickness adjustment on the back of the headstock.
Here are some other guitars with back of headstock painted or veneered to give you the general idea of where I'm heading with this

That would be awesome if you would/could do that! I love that first image of the veneered headstock and neck.
Sounds like a great plan.
cool idea - that top pic looks like the go, nice than paint
It will certainly be an interesting contrast of veneers from front to back. Are you going to orient the flame grain across the headstock as in the reference image, or match the lengthwise grain orientation of the faceplate?
So veneer is now glued onto the back of headstock. Started shaping - here's the beginning for some idea of how it will look. I accidentally split the veneer on other side so this now glued and clamped up. Another battle scar lol

Too bad of the crack!
Would thin CA glue help to hide the crack or will it mostly be under the row of tuners?
Nice grain and it blends well with neck.
Ok so at close of play ready for a tidy up final sand. I CA glued the crack, sanded back and split is almost invisible. Tuner will also hide some. So after a day of blood, sweat no tears and mild coarse language it turned out ok
The photo is at a funny angle and not as wonky as it looks!

And wiped down to see flame

Top effort Ponch.
Looking great! :)
Nice work ponch veneer looks great
Good job and that flame really gonna look killer when finished..
Love it. That crack has disappeared and that flame is wonderful. Really lovely work mate.
That veneer looks fantastic Ponch. Love the grain through the flame. cannot see that split at all
Ihave just started on the same model.
great choice:)
I'll be curious to see how you tackle the pick up, since the flat plastic base does not conform to the rounded top.
I have decided to leave it in its natural colour with just a few coats of shellac (french polish)-
good luck!!
Rafael
Still a bit time poor but on the right side of the tracks in getting the neck finished. The veneer is complete on back of headstock and I'm now applying Truoil same method as the body. So should have this 90% done by the weekend

Geez Ponch, you have done an amazing job with those veneers. Long shot on back of neck and it is pretty hard to see any join lines. Hopefully your TO application technique fills the tiny join line on back of headstock too.
Cheers Waz. It has been a voyage of discovery, frustration, 'stuff ups', foul language etc. but have learned heaps. And now have the utmost respect for master luthiers.
That's the plan with the TO technique, lets see if it works......
It will look very sweet and pretty once finished. Any plans for hanging up on display somewhere in the house? All of mine live in a back bedroom mostly hidden under the bed in hard cases or gig bags.
Ah well.... our so called 'study' is rapidly becoming a 'music' room. Guitars, basses, flutes, mics, karaoke machine (?!), some smaller amps/cabinets. So in short it should be on display ;)
Sounds good.
Neck has (finally) docked with the body and is now living away from the danger of my workshop.... I'll be handling with kid gloves from here on in.
