Oh Firetruck is it ever. The worst part is the fact it is around the corner from my office. You'll likely find that spokeshave blade will need a regrind straight off. Those CMT orange tools bits are freaking awesome, go through maple like butter.

Same here but that's part of the fun
Looks good Pabs as satin. I think I've gone over satin with gloss before if thats an option. My JBA4 was satin poly body but now has a bit of a shine due to numerous application of coats....

hey Pabs, why couldnt you just go over the satin with a few gloss coats, just use the same brand and you should be fine, no need to strip it back
Hey Stan, thanks for the tip, but I'm just gonna keep on going with what I've got. A) don't want to spend any more money right now B) really digging how it looks now. Gotta roll with them punches.
Hey Pabs as you say keep applying a few more coats and should look great and give the axe some protection.
As you say no wet sanding and polishing required at the end so that's a win win !
Nice Carbatec stash you got too !
Pabs. I have both water and oil based min wax wipe on poly. I have both satin an gloss finish. You can get a gloss finish out of all four.
I saw a video on YouTube ages ago. E.g. How to get a gloss finish with satin wipe on polyurethane.
In essence....two parts....one don't shake your poly....evidently satin poly has particles in it that settle out when left. These particles disrupt the surface light reflection and make the surface appear matte.
Second...after the finish has cured.....I have hit the finish with auto cut cream....then meguiars ultimate compound.....and then a couple of laps with meguiars scratch x 2.0.....then four coats of a pure carnauba auto wax.
Full gloss finish every time.
Great tips Ozz, thanks!
of course Oz, i didnt think of this - it's the same reason you dont final polish satin paint - it goes gloss, genius in it's simplicity
Two and a half weeks curing, and I think ready to move on.
I was pretty set on using the white pickguard that came with the kit, but I figured I'd do up a black one just in case.

Now I'm a bit torn. Leaning towards the black, but, I don't know. Not very good at making decisions. Opinions?
looks great Pabs the mock build, is the headstock similar colour to the body ?
I am thinking black pickguard suits better
Cheers dude. Headstock is natural.
that's right Pabs. If you had black hardware it would be black PG for sure. I think you will find others will prefer black PG
Looks good either way Pabs, but I'm leaning towards the black also.
They both look so good and to make things difficult I think I like the white one

White hands down. Sorry Pabs :D
I'm with Fuzzbeard in that the white one gives it a bit more contrast rather than just looking like an oversized black emu egg sitting in the middle of your axe.
To really mix things up, what would it look like with a clear one instead?
Thanks guys.
Waz, the pickup rout is way oversized, but if it wasn't I'd probably go that way, or even no pickguard.
Pabs,
I had remembered something else about finishing....and have been looking and finally found it.....have a read.....any poly done like this as long as you don't shake it will give you the finish.....then do the auto cut, buff and wax.

Cheers Ozz. I stumbled across that article while I was deciding whether to use wipe on poly or not and ended up not wanting to risk it and left it matte (now it fits in with most of my other guitars).

So, here's where I'm up to. Pretty much everything done bar wiring and final setup. Don't think I'll have time to get it done before the end of the month.
Neck needed to be shimmed because the strings sat miles high. The bridge (Gotoh 201b-4) is really nice, kit tuners are working out very well. Bone nut still needs a bit of work. Overall, for a not yet set up bass, it plays and sounds (acoustically) great. Getting there.
looking great Pabs, glad you went the black pickguard. Does it still have plastic on it ?
Yeah mate. Traditional very last step is pulling off the protective plastic on the pickguard. Lol.
Looks fantastic Pabs.
cheers,
Gav.
Looking great Pabs. I think the high mass bridge adds to the string height. I've since tweaked by JBA-4 (with same high mass bridge). I've removed the neck shim and took a bit off the bottom of each bridge saddle to bring down the action (same as Flender have done on the modern USA Jazz high mass bridge)
Wow how nice is that mate. Love the colour on the body. :)
Glad you went the back pickguard...it looks great, really sets off the colour!
Finally got the wiring done yesterday. A bit of a rat's nest, but heat shrink made it much more manageable.

And it's making noise! Phew.
Getting there. All it needs now is a set up and the nut finalised.

looks great Pabs, don't forget to peel of the protective layer on the pickguard !
Can't see a circuit board for the active system, is it near the battery ?
Thanks man, it's just hiding.

ah ok cool Pabs, so the circuit board is in the battery box you circled red ?
what are you initial thoughts of the sound so far ?
The battery box is all together separate. That little black box has the circuit board epoxied into it and is hidden under the control plate.
As for sounds, not sure yet. I've only had a chance to plug it into my micro Marshall just to make sure it worked. Through that it sounded like crap, but that's how everything sounds through that amp.
ah ok cool cheers Pabs
Pabs gonna slaps some bass!
looks as sweet as a ripe mango.
Had almost a whole day to myself yesterday. Bliss. Got the last of the setup and nut work done, so that's pretty much it for this guy.

Pretty happy with how it's turned out. Plays well, sounds ok through my crappy testing amp, wifey is nursing a hangover, so no chance of firing up the ampeg. :(
Really Nice build Pabs
Looks great, I love the simplicity
The perfect day Pabs! This bass is sensational

very nice Pabs, you know now I am going to have to add a MMB to my build list !
