How'd the repair around neck slot go Kells I'm liking the colour
Hi Kimbal, the neck repair is comming up OK. I've got a way to go with the colour though.
I've put the grain filler on and one layer of walnut. Looks like I might have accidently wiped a bit off it where the laminate is showing through at the top of the slot
PK
It looks like your going for a traditional colour which I'm all for on this type of guitar . Well done Kells glad your sorting out lifting laminate.
Kimball
Tks Kimbal,
The Colour is basically a walnut colour with a slightly darker brown burst around the edge, on the top.
The darker brown is actually a water color, some how it has managed to mix with the walnut brown, which is some toxic brew.
It has come up as a real relic affect, really looks like something out of the fourties or fifties.
I am still wainting on a 3nf cap for the tone control. Must be getting hand made in China.
The pickups I have for it are Gold, and four wire, I'm putting them onto a set of SD tripple shot rings.
My biggest worry is goimg to be the pickguard. Pablo made me a pickguard up witha filigree decoration. It's an aluminium colour so it will look more grey against the gold..
The neck itself is looking pretty nice. I have a custom truss rod cover comming with my name on it. Line 1 "Kelly" Line 2 "Custom built"

shame about the laminate mate.
I've seen this one in person guys and girls and it's a cracker.
Tks Stan,
I'd say I'll have this together soon. It's only a matter of finding the time to get it done.
a few more layers of Minwax on the top then the sides and back.
Minwax requires a minimum of 3 hour between coats, so you can't really do both sides in one hit.
It needs to sit firm and flat so you can wipe it on. so at least a week before I glue the neck in. than onto the fitting out.
I'm still waiting on that slow boat from China to arive. and one from Philladelphia... the fish eye truss cover.
PK
I've put it on vertically, but you need to wipe it on thin. Flat is better.
Kells you could get the pickguard filigree gold washed or plated being aluminum you could get it anodised in gold
Tks Kimbo,
now you've got me thinking. maybe even gold leaf.
PK
Got the truss rod cover and it's the perfect size

Very nice indeed PK.
It's been a few weeks, but that's because I tripped up at the Gym while running with holding a 5 Kg weight over my head with both hands. No the weight didn't land on my head. but my chest impacted the concrete pretty damned hard, so hard I broke three ribs. they are just comming good now.
good enough to stand out in the shed and burn skin off my fingers while building the loom for this beast.
I've gone with a push pull A500k pot with .023uf and .068uf for the tone circuit, and A500k pots for the individual pick Vols and Master Vol.
I am having reservations about the three way switch as it ended up with a lot of earths attached, so may have got too hot.
All the wiring is push back cotton shielding over which I put lots of shrink wrap tubing to avoid any earths.
The layout is pretty much the same as a Gretsch but with the push pull replacing the two way tone switch.

great work PK.
What brand are the tuners? I've got exactly the same style for my 57 Harmony build, mine are generics ...
Hi Stan,
The Tuners are Wilkinson Imperials, the Grover Versions are about $90
From memory these are about $40 a set, I bought them when I had money... lol

Another View of the loom
the glossing of this beast is taking forever. many many layers of wipe on poly. and rubbing back, just got a few blemishes to give up on or get rid of...
using wipe on poly for my two LP projects....
Frankly, it's a tricky product and I think I prefer acrylic clear to use...
Yeah I'm with you on this Stan.
I'll be going back to acryllic. but need to get some one to show me what I am doing wrong.
I guess I need to practice a bit, so I can learn what air gun settings I should be using.
PK
As a graduate of the Jarrod academy for guitar clear coating, I have to say acrylic all the way. After my massive fail with Minwax poly on the stone roses build I won't go near the stuff anymore. Nitro is also an option but it's sooo expensive. Acrylic in bulk from the auto sprayer, on in a can from the big green shed is my choice for solid colour builds all the way.
cheers,
Gav.
Soldering up the pickups, but still a long way to go with the gloss.
Should have left the Minwax alone and used spray on stuff. Minwax takes more coats to build a gloss than shellac. Three coats of acrylic would have doen the job.
Pickups are gold toasters fitted to Seymour Duncan tripple shot surounds.
Combine this with the push pull tone control, this baby should have a huge dynamic tone range.
Great wiring ideas mate. Very tidy. Do you play a bit of jazz?
Tks Nico,
Nah I don't play Jazz. I doubt that what I play can even be termed music. my repertoire is limited to the few songs I remember from the late sixties, Stones, Small Faces, Beatles, Hendrix and Clapton. Oh can't forget Chain
What I do enjoy is sitting in my studio(spare room) and just making stuff up. Sometimes I come up with a few nice chord progressions.
One thing I have always enjoyed is creating stuff. whether it's a bit of music, that I am more likely to forget in ten minutes or building a guitar. I like to use all those little tradie tricks I've learnt over a lifetime of doing things.
I find the joy of creating physical things very fullfilling.
Building guitars is one way of reaching fulfilment. Each guitar I make I learn somehting new. I am sure the missus is getting sick of it.
A couple of years ago I built a scratchy copy of a Maton I once had, now I have thirteen guitars. would have been fourteen but I got rid of one I wasn't all that happy with.
When I am gone some of these will get handed on to my kids or grand kids.

Thanks for sharing with this thread.
Ive jumped in the deep end with one of these builds, and the information you are imparting is going to be invaluable.
Tks SB.
this build is in Limbo at the moment, but only because it is Winter in Melbourne and experience has taught me not to try and do Guitar work when it's cold damp and wet, nor when it is too hot. Melbournes temperate weather goes from 42 C in Sumer to Zero in Winter.
These are the extremes we get. Usually we sit between 10-30C
I am still applying gloss in the Form of wipe on Poly. This stuff is CRAP do not waste your time with it.
I am about 20 coats in on the deck and while it has a nice gloss it just isn't up there with acrylic.
I am seriously thinking of heading off to some body shop and getting them to spray acryllic all over the bidy, this one and the Black which is still also in Limbo.
I have all the bits to finish this but it need to have a good fininsh before I finish it. ;)
I need to glue the neck in and do the lectronics.
I am happy with the loom I built although I do like What Weirdy and Jeff came up with for his GR-!sf
I am also seriosly thinking about ripping the Fau Bigsby off the PIG(one of my other builds, really should be used as firewood),
But given tremlo systems are notoriously hard to keep in tune I just feel this guitar deserves better than that.
Cheers one and all.
PK
So... did you get this finished?
Hi SB,
I'm still applying Min wax to it, but have just about had enough of that stuff. It has a nice shine, but still too much graining comming through. I haven't done much over winter as it's too cald and damp in my workshop to be playing with clear coats.
I could assemble it as it is but I just want to go that little bit further with the finish, like spray over the Min wax with acrylic...:)
Cheers PK
even better Beef the forecast for Melbourne, 28 degrees for the grand final Saturday, 30 Sunday, 32 Monday and 31 Tuesday
great clear coat weather
and 25 Friday for the public holiday
six ft hick 20 years anniversary shows in Melbourne :D :D :D
Hot hot hot!
I never knew you were in Melbs Beef!! Yeah this weekend will be perfect spray weather, get to it!
haha poor PK has been thread jacked !
I never heard of six foot hick but saw couple of vids on Youtube, they are old school punk for sure.
Nah G/F and Bathurst W/E's are non work weekends.... the only thing to pass shall be cold beers.
Gav you are lucky for your sake this is a family friendly forum or I'd have some pretty nasty comments towards you :) !
@ PK, too right mate, Bathurst is my version of xmas day, there's no better day on the calender for me
haha no worries Gav I'd be talking it up if Freo made the GF so I will be barracking for Eagles as I am a proud and loyal West Australian
Although I am gagging at the thought of it.....
Go Steggles..ooops.. Weagles.... Ummmmmm.... Eagles!!
Hope they smash the wee and poo's.
Is it possible for both of them to lose?
Eagles for me in this one, they've provided some edge of seat entertainment in the past against Swannies esp. 2005/06!
