nice and shiny Stan, looks great, is that miniwax gloss wipe on ?
cheers Wokka, yes Minwax wipe on poly (from the evil green shed...)
Stan there's a gloss and satin version of miniwax wipe on so I was presuming it was gloss ?
That purple Stan, I love it. And a stinger on the back too, niiice!
Hooley Dooley that rich purple/magenta cap has got some presence.
This effort will be a real cracker when its done.
I'll be interested to see how that "scarf" treatment on the neck comes out too.
@ Wokka, yes mate, it's the gloss. Didn't know there was satin, will look for that one!
@ Bargey, thanks mate, stinger will get a purple out line, like a pin stripe, because the edges are a bit too hard to clean up (it should look cool too)
@ Max, thanks Maxxy, my sister says that if she can't sound cool, she will look cool with it!
The purple is looking amazing Stan. The wipe on poly suits this colour really nicely too. Great job!!
cheers,
Gav.
cheers Gav
the wipe on poly was being problematic.
so sanded it off and went acrylic clear. nice quality automotive stuff...
it has been curing in the garage for literally a couple of months, last few days have been pretty warm indeed, should be dry, right?
no solvent smell, feels hard, so time to polish.
got this result:

turned it over, it's resting on a clean cotton towel, and did this on the front:

nice, yeah. not perfect, but getting there.
so after what is about 2 hours of resting on it's back, no chemical involvement, no weight, just it own weight, i get this (.and this has happened to me before...).
this is indentations in the clear, not stuck on fluff (there is some of that too, but...), I am going mental, I have redone this twice, I just dont know where to go from here...

this has been resanded before, i just dont think i can do it again, i think i might have to reorder another kit...
Oh dear. I know this pain very well. Happened on my jazzmaster.
What i think has happened is the buffing process has put enough heat into the finish to soften it a little. Then turning it over straight away and doing the other side has forced the towel into the paint.
I would say, you could sand this out and re polish.
Stan, I've got plenty of acrylic here. :D
yes possibly, i thought so too, but some time elapsed between polishing and turning it over.
I might resand and see how it goes, not confident though...
Yikes...
OK. Lets see if we cant nut this out.
First, did you sand right back to bare wood and reaaply the stain/ paint?
Second, what type of stain/ paint did you use?
There may be an incompatibility issue here.
hey DB, first it was the ink and wipe on poly, the wipe on poly was tinting yellow as it dried and i didnt like it.
rubbed it back to the ink, not bare timber. on the back just rubbed it back to timber and used an automotive primer, top coat black and clear, all acrylic, all the same brand, all good quality from an automotive paint seller.
tried sticking my fingernail into the top, in a spot that wont show - left a small cut in the surface easily, like it's still too soft. surely not, it's been a couple of months and the last few days have been hot, around 30...
resanded the back, came out ok, repolished, glossy, far from right, but it will come up ok. i'm concerned though it will still be "soft".
after turning it over, very minute signs of the towel affecting the top. this is a clean towel, with no chemical exposure. it's the paint cure i'm sure
sanded back to 2000

polished
http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...l%20LP/074.jpg
fingernail test... still soft (2 small marks to right of hole)

Stan to be honest the paint must be quite thick and not left long enough between coats. This is not a reaction with anything else as acrylic does not react like that. Cut the clear back to as thin as you dare and leave it for two weeks without polishing it. After a couple of weeks start with the fine cut and then polish.
I agree with Jrod's diagnosis.
From what you have said you did it right except perhaps went in a tad heavy handed... I am guilty of that one too :p
Patience, Grasshopper, Patience is the key :)
(Something I often lack when finishing Guitars, but I am getting better.....)
Jrod, makes sense mate, good advice
DB, patience, must get some of that, haha, the green shed has it, right?
It's very important to give time for the vapors and thinning agents to release inbetween coats otherwise well this happens. You end up with a crust shell and sponge underneath it. Part of what Pabs said is correct aswell when your finish is too thick. When you polish it does heat the clear which is why a two stage polish works well. You must however on wood not over polish as the clear will not stick to tree as it would steel. I use ntro nowdays due too how thin you can get it to spray.
I was avoiding going back to the naughty room Gav hence leaving the I out. Now DB will know you grass. See you there.
thanks guys, DB will love this one as it will be the most sanded guitar in existence...
Oo Goodie, all this has given me some hope of resurrecting the finish on the GR1-SF which I have used Minwax on. So I'll go over all the above comments and see if I can cut it back and get the orange peel and graining out of it. :)
BTW Stan I really do have a lot of acrylic left. maybe on the next one. :D
PK
@Jrod... You might find me lurking in the warehouse... Been guilty of using Ni Ni myself of late.
Unavoidable when doing resto jobs on classic Guitars....
@Stan.. You can never sand too much... That is unless you sand it down to toothpick thickness...
DB can I have a corner in the naughty room to send people who mess up paint jobs. I promise to keep it clean and patrons well punished.
Nice.
I will make sure that area is well stocked with sandpaper, Jrod :)
Might have to stock 80 grit and up lol...
Love the colour! I'm thinking more on the magenta side for my build into the black. Might have to hit up my local art store and see what colours at available :)
Have you sorted the clear coat yet? Is it done?!
Just about done Shazz, I keep finding little repairs.
You don't need a lot of ink, so it wouldn't be too costly to get a few bottles and mix a colour, about $15 a bottle, and they are nice inks.
Downside is acrylic clear takes ages to properly cure, well is has for me... But ink as a stain works great
Nice! Can't wait to see it finished!
Mixing sounds good! Custom colour.
Man!! That is fantastic. Great job.
Love it! Great job!
Awesome work Stan your persistence was well worth the wait cheers
