Thanks Pabs:-)
Nice work Bargy. Looking the part
Cheers bro, nowhere near the sort of stuff you're doing doin' but you gotta start somewhere huh:-)
nice work on the binding Barge, I'll be getting a cutting bit for the dremel soon, it just lifts the class of the build.
So the body will be painted black and the veneer on the back clear coats ?
Yeah you're dead right Wokks, it definitely adds another dimension to the build.Quote:

And yep black body all over bar the strip down the back, then covered in nitro clear.
So anyway Pablo's wicked plastics turned up today in the form of some pickguards, headstock bling and a beautiful routing template for the humbucker, absolutely amazing work:-)
I had to take a few mock up pics before I got everything ready for paint.
Now we're getting somewhere:-)

wow that pickguard and headstock bling look awesome, well done Pablo !
Looks great the mock build Barge
Amazing work bargey. That pickguard look fantastic, as does the headstock racing stripe :) ! This going to be one amazing guitar.
Cheers,
Gav.
Unreal loving the progress and work gone into this guitar.

She's all come to a screaming halt now the paint's gone on though, I just need to switch out of building mode and keep away from it for a while (if that's possible)
@stan, yeah it's one of the best bits about building I reckon once you start putting the hardware on and getting an idea of how the end product's going to look, good fun:-)

nearly there now though, gonna look so sweet once the paints done and you get it all built up, very impressive
looks amazing Barge, black paint with MOP binding and the veneer on the back this really is a classy customised axe. Keep up the good work. What sort of clear coat you going, gloss or satin ?
Just started checking this thread Bargie and am blown away by the look of the binding with the colour of the body. That's fantastic man. A classy thing like that belongs in my collection. You already have my address. ;-)
sorry Lozza there's already a long queue for new ownership of this axe as soon as GOTM photos are taken :)
Cheers Ben, Wokks, Lozza:-)
To answer you question Wokks, I was originally planing on doing a gloss back and sides with a satin top but the satin lacquer was out of stock and not expected for 6-8 weeks or something ridiculous so gloss all over at this point.
Hey you lads better not speak too soon I haven't finished yet, still plenty of time to f*#k it right up, it's all been going a bit too smoothly thus far....
That is such a nice finish mate. Good luck with the clears!
Bargy the satin top looks the goods - wait for the satin clear: your original plan is just the thing...
Holy Guacamole!
How on earth did you get your paint looking so darn fantastic?!
The black knight, geez bargy ya gota be happy with that.
Beautiful paint job Bargey! This build is getting better and better. Absolutely fantastic job!
Cheers,
Gav.
The back came up real nice, probably for the simple fact I got pretty o.c.d with the body contours and took it all down to about 1200 grit so yeah..the prep definitely paid off. The top didn't actually come up half as well and could have probably benefited from a grain filler, there's some pores showing through in quite a few spots it is quite dimply. After a light going over with some 800 it's not going to be anything a few coats of lacquer won't hide though.Quote:

@ Jarrod, the "Black Knight" hehe good one, naa it's comin' up not too bad so far (touch wood)
@Gav, thanks heaps man
Waterslide decals turned up today so I shot a few mist coats of clear on the headstock and threw the back decal on.
He's done an awesome job and I would definitely recommend him for anyone needing nitro(or acrylic for that matter) compatible decals.

Holy hell that looks just awesome. really digging this build
Just knocked over with the features, design work, paint, finish - everything.
This baby will be an absolute humdinger!
I'm Really keen to see some more progress shots as this epic unfolds . . .
@ Tim, Max - Hey thanks heaps guys.
Front decal's on and goes nicely with the "racing stripe" as Gav dubbed it. The photo doesn't really do the gold lettering justice but I'm sure some pics further down the track should highlight it a bit better.

looks totally sick Barge, whats DLG stand for ?
Thanks man, Danilayne Guitars, my two kids Dani and Layne:-)
nice name Barge, so you going to run with DLG ?
Yeah man that's the name I'm stickin' with, I actually used it on the "Blacktop" on the back of the headstock but as I put it on a bit later I didn't post any more pics.Quote:

So anyway a little bit of a set back today in the form of me stripping the top back to bare timber.
I'd been having real issues with dust particles sticking to the finish like a magnet so I decided to steel wool a bit of the crap off before the next clear coat, did that then proceeded to wipe down with some Prepsol to get rid of any remaining shit.
Wiped clean (or so I thought), went to shoot another coat only to find the residue from the Prepsol started to react with the nitro and was leaving patches where the lacquer wasn't adhering properly.
In a eureka moment I decided to try and wipe off the still wet patch of lacquer with a bit of the Prepsol only to discover that Presol + wet Nitro is the exact formula for paint stripper and the finish wiped off right down to the timber.
While something like this isn't ideal it's going to give me the opportunity to fill the grain properly (something I should have done from the start) and get a nice smooth surface to work with.
I've also tracked down some satin black nitro so I can go with my original plan of a satin black top.
Luckily the back and sides came out unscathed so all in all I'm taking the positives out of this:-)
Onward and upward.

Ah nuggets. Well if you ever need paint stripper you're all set.
Hehe damn straight there Pabs, it actually works like a fricken charm:-)Quote:

bummer Barge, I thought this axe may be ready for GOTM. Oh well as you say take the positives out of it to fill the grain better and you found a satin black nitro
Yeah I don't think there's any way this would have made it in to GOTM and for that matter probably no time in the near future either.
We're just in the process of taking over a new property and packing so while I'll have my very own workshop/mancave to play in once D-day (settlement) hits I'm not really sure when I'll get her finished:-(
I was kind of hoping to get all the clear coats on then at least it can just sit and cure until I'm ready to finish it off.
yer ok Barge, well it will be all worth it once you have moved and are setup in the man cave. I always add 50% onto the time I think I'll finish a project. You got to be realistic and allow for small issues !
Yeah definitely Wokks, or big issues for that matter:PQuote:

shame about the set back, but you will have an even better axe in the end
Man, that musta broken your heart, Bargie. Still, I have no doubt you'll be back to where you were in no time. I'm loving the headstock, fantastic finish!
@stan, lawry - cheers guys, it's actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise really, now that I've grain filled the top it's only gonna need a few coats of black satin and I'm done, rather than mucking around trying to fill pores with lacquer and ending up with a finish a mile thick.
