Super. All looking good now.
Ready to drill the string-through holes yet?
Thanks Simon.
All I need to do is get a small sheet of MDF so I can make myself another drill guide as per this vid.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SZA03DVITA
Then it's waiting for those 2 damned switches to turn up in the post.
cheers, Mark.
I put tru-oil over the acrylic on a piece of maple.
No poblems with it. Adhered to the area with acrylic and coated evenly.
Then tried it on a headstock, again with no problems.
Good news then Colin.
I've also had a successful test with Tru-Oil over this dye.
I've made a couple of drill guides in the past but I'll make a new one for this project.

Hoping for an evenly spaced string through.
cheers, Mark.
String through drilling. Forgot to photograph some action yet again.
Attachment 36024
Drill guide worked quite well. Both holes 52mm apart on the back. Same as the bridge spacing. Hooray!!
Attachment 36025
Now a product review. This hand drill from the BGS is absurdly branded 'Craftright'.
Is is the single most useless tool I have had the misfortune to buy.
It's grip of the bit is more slippery than a car dealer's handshake.
Attachment 36026
So despite not having a drill press, I'm quite happy with this outcome
Attachment 36027
Still waiting for those switches to show up.
cheers, Mark.
Did you do all those holes with the "egg beater"?
Geez King, well done on the outcome.
I too get tempted by stuff like craftright, it's never really a great solution.
You know the drill.
Thanks chaps.
McCreed I used the power drill for the small holes. I was intending to 'hand drill' the larger holes for the ferrules.
Didn't trust myself doing those with a power drill.
Yes S.M. It was less than half the price of the 'Stanley' alternative. A false economy in this case.
edit: If you look this up on the Bunnings site and check 'reviews' you'll see only 2 , both negative and one was mine.
Yes Simon, it's a day for drilling.
It was getting late when I was planning on a visit tomorrow for a longer drill bit to drill another earth hole but then a 'eureka' moment.
Attachment 36028
I can put the drill away for now.
Wish those damned switches would show up. 3 days past the ebay delivery window.
cheers, Mark.
So while Australia Post are dragging the chain....
Moved on to finalising the neck.
Decided to loosen the purse strings and lashed out on SCA Septone clear.
Sprayed a couple of coats and left it for a couple of days.
Despite 'quick drying' printed on the can, once again reality tells a different story.
Put the standard decal on and will layer a few more coats on.

cheers, Mark.
Looks good. Very classy and understated.
Cheers Dan, That's precisely the effect I am aiming for hehe.
cheers, Mark.
Must... Resist... Quip...

Wow!!!
So many great ideas going on with this build i will be carrying in my mind for mine.
Thanks mate for a brilliant diary

Thanks Oli.
Just a collection of ideas gleaned from other folk's in my past attempts.
I checked the tracking on the 2 switches last night.
Seems the seller sat on them for 8 days before bothering to post them.
The rest is Aussie Post taking their sweet time delivering.
In the meantime I've put my Epiphone up on a 3 day sale on e-bay.
Had to make way for another guitar in the collection.
It's been sold and posted to Queensland...arrived last Friday.
Switches are coming from NSW....eventually.
cheers, Mark.
Just for the record... I didn't buy it!
I'm still trying "make way" for the two I'm building now!
Doh! A fool and his money are soon parted.
Attachment 36162
cheers, Mark.
As long as the handle turns the chuck and the chuck holds the bit firmly, you should be OK.
I keep watching tool-tuning videos and keep wanting to buy cheap tools (that I'll probably never use) just to improve them and make them fairly decent in case I ever need to use them e.g. if I suddenly want to make a chest of drawers.
Well the Craftright one was completely useless as it instantly lost grip on the drill bit.
When it comes to hand drills from BGS you have little choice...this was the only alternative
Albeit double the price.
Not had to use this one that much but you immediately get a sense that it's been cheaply constructed.
It does in fact grip the drill bit firmly though so in that regard it is worth pursuing with.
The idea being that with American Ash the power drill does tend to burn quite easily and I'm planning on using a drill to rout out the cavity for the 2 switches.
cheers, Mark.
Ah the waiting game.
Thought I would tidy up the wiring.

Nice job!
Very professional.
Ricky
Thanks Dan and Ricky.
Well it looks like the switches are not going to arrive before the weekend kicks in so...
Buggar it, I'm going ahead with the stain.

I can always rout out a cavity later, as it will be under the pickguard.
cheers, Mark.
I like that red!
Hi Dan, It may appear pink at the moment, but I'll probably try another coat.
It's also going to get Tru-Oil so I'm expecting a bit more yellowing to occur.
cheers, Mark.
OK. I still like it. Should look good after another coat as well. I didn't even think it was pink TBH.
It will of course look darker with a clear coat on. Looks fine as it is to me.
I don't think I have any photos of my ash tele post-dye/pre-poly, but I seem to remember it looking significantly paler before the clear coat went on, and it finished up with the lovely red you saw in the my pics.
Looking good too.
Thanks for the input chaps.
I'll take it outside tomorrow and give it a once over to see if I've missed any areas.
...also see if there's some patchiness in colour and then take it from there.
cheers, Mark.
Went over it again with a cotton bud.
Small pores where the stain hadn't reached.
Then on to the Tru-Oil.
First coat of many.
Attachment 36185
cheers, Mark.
Now that's RED!
Nice
Thanks McCreed, in real life it isn't quite so 'warm' red.
I'll probably have to see if I can get a better way to take a photo.
Up to 3 coats and counting.
edit: Afer something that Oli eluded to, I"m thinking of upgrading the pickups to 'humbuckers' like these.
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Wilkinso...r/143597562682
I will then probably utilise the 3-way switch that came with the kit which will mean I'll have 3x 3-way switch combinations all up.
Some mind boggling to occur working out the wiring.
cheers ,Mark.
Hey Mark, Ive also ordered two hot rail typepickups.
And while waiting have been contemplating the type of wiring i will pursue. I like your idea and will be watching closely your evolution!!
If you find a schematic id really appreciate if you could share it here.
Ps: ive been playing this guitar every day and it is super comfortable. Im so impressed with its size it is a real cracker of a guitar.

Hi Oli.
Great minds think alike then.
I ordered 2 hot rail humbuckers from Alibaba.
Thinking of incorporating the 3 way switch to make up to 9 variations.
I don't know the first thing about wiring so it will be pure experimentation.
Did see some humbucker schematics.
This is one that I'm playing around with.
Not at all the 'final' (I haven't put the tone pot in it yet)
Attachment 36226
BTW The red is a lot more mellow than in that shot.
Here's a quick mock-up...real life is probably somewhere between that first shot and this one.
Still lots of Tru-Oil coats to go though.
Attachment 36227
cheers, Mark.
Hi Joe. I didn't end up buying the Wilkinson pickups.
Another brand (Nux) caught my eye...or should I say the price did.
Attachment 36228
I got a Wilkinson bridge for my Tele-Strat. Didn't have any quality issue with it.
I have ordered Wilkinson tuners for this guitar. Mainly cosmetic but will report any issues.
Attachment 36229
cheers, Mark.
