Is it some sort of press?
Gav's right it's a nut clamp. hence the recessed edge.
PK
The Gavmiester is 90% correct..
The clamping jig is to hold any bone nut blank.
But... There is more to this jig than just clamping...
Thar rounded front edge on the timber has something to do with it I reckon, but what...
Does the word "radius" come into the equation per chance?
Whatever it is, it sure is going to be handy for multiple jobs.
DB the bridge is there so you can run the 6 strings through to the nut slots to check the depth of the slots.
I still like my idea it's a device to wack Magpie fans hahah
Bwahh. have you got anything to fix braces in my Epi Acoustic. :P
I'm about to build a couple of little wind out presses from a couple of 80 mm turnbuckles and some clamp knobs. :)
For a mirror I just bought a an A4 sheet of mirror that I'll cut into 3 70mm by 295 segments and use tape to hinge it so I can shove it in the sounf hole so I can see whats busted. Had the USB Borryscope in last night but could not get enough bend to actually have the lens far enough away to see what's wrong.
Oh the bridge is there so he can line up saddles. :)

I can see this is messing with peeps heads :)
The bridge is there as a clamp to hold the irwin in place... It was just lying around so it got used for this job, saved stuffing around cutting and drilling a chunk of steel....
The radius on the block is purely for clearance.... But what is it clearing?
your not wrong there DB !
the radius of the base block is to have clearance for your nut files.
I said in an earlier comment the bridge was to hold down the clamp so I must be 10% correct ?
See my comment posted 4:26pm yesterday.
That bloody bridge threw everyone off !
Not clearance for nut files either.....
