Plenty of expert advice given already and reckon it needs a few more coats of TO before sanding. I would even suggest diluting it 2 parts TO to 1 part mineral turps and gently wipe the stuff on. You shouldn't be trying to rub it dry as that will just make a mess. Instead the wipe on effect should look slightly moist but not show any obvious rub lines. Too moist and it will cause runs.

So I have bought the 'wet and dry' sandingpaper; starting at 800 grit and from there up to 1000 grit, 1200 grit, 1500 grit and 2000 grit.
I have applied six coats of True oil so far. Should I apply more or is this the moment I could start using the 800 grit? And if so, should I start sanding dry when the last coat is completely cured or can I wet the sandingpaper with the TO and do wetsanding?
Hi Kick, 800 has too much bite if used dry and will clog up the paper really quick without something to keep it lubricated.
Pour some water in a bucket and add a couple of drops of dish washing detergent then wrap the grit paper around a cork sanding block and dunk it in the water to lube things up. Then run a couple of light passes over area to be sanded, rinse the sanding block (with paper still wrapped around) in the water to dissolve waste and keep lubricated, then go again, and again, and again. Also handy to have a micro fibre cloth to wipe away the excess water on the guitar body as you don't want any of the sludge drying on the surface.
Using TO as the lube is quite messy and can lead to runs very quickly. I am actually using diluted TO with around 50mm x 50mm squares of 2000 at the moment to apply final top coats on the Swampy Tele and hope to put a couple more on tomorrow then get stuck in with a proper water based wet & dry session on Tuesday to bring it home. For the final polishing it must be done with water.

Yes I would be very careful with the 800 grit as the TO goes on very light coats so you will remove a lot of it if you go to much with 800... I use the 1200 grit paper to rub in Tru Oil because it pushed and works it into the grain while also continually smoothing the surface. I got the idea from crimson guitars... he uses that technique to apply his finishing oil, which is very similar to Tru Oil.

I have done what you suggested and I started with 1200 grit lubed in water with some dish washing detergent and it works! I kept wiping of the sludge and when I finished and dried the top I noticed that the gloss wasn't as it was before. But when I applied a new coat of the TO it all came back! I'll let it cure for a day and repeat this tomorrow with 1500 grit.Quote:
