Yeah, it was a kick in the guts alright. There is a lot of contention over the band that won our section, who should have been moved up into the next division. They are also a Tassie band, and have won the last two state championships, and now the National title. Since September last year, they have been classed as a B grade band, but still competed in the C grade section in the Nationals. Not that it would have changed our results, we finished 6th out of 8 bands, but it would have been a lot closer competition.
The judges do change around, and they all have different tastes in how a piece should be played. I guess you could stack the deck if you know the judges tastes if you know far enough ahead, but that would take away the band's musical directors own take on the music, and we might not enjoy playing it that way. It's like playing Russian Roulette in a way.
We had 4 stage pieces to play, a Hymn, Test Piece, Own Choice, and Stage March. With the Hymn, I saw our Crit Sheet, and all of the boxes were ticked in the Really Good, or Excellent section, however we only received 57/100 points. He couldn't fault our technique, intonation, sound quality etc, yet obviously didn't like the way we delivered it.
You can't please everyone.
Here's some photos of the group

I feel I should explain the last picture! This year, there was a competition on the most entertaining evolution (a Right Turn in layman's terms!!) during the street march. We picked a circus theme for our evolution, hence the clown wigs! We started off in our regular band formation, and played a fairly traditional march piece. Just before hitting the corner, instead of keeping our 5 files, we split into 3 files, changed our music to a circus style music, and had some of our younger members do cartwheels through the middle of the band as we went around the corner. Once we finished the evolution, the wigs were all thrown up in the air and we marched off in our regular 5 files, and back to the traditional music! We don't know who won the most entertaining evolution yet, it's worth $500 to the winning band.
In regards to the veneer, I was limited in my choices since I was going for thickness instead of design. There are some wider looking grain patterns in the piece of veneer I have, but most are off to one edge, and would be trimmed off anyway.

It's finally happened... the clown army has risen.

But isn't that the traditional Tasmanian costume? ;)

Wow, the Brit has jokes!!! :p;)

I'm sorry, it was too easy a target to resist.

Haha, never worry about upsetting me Simon! We poke more fun at ourselves than anyone else!!

Yep, it sure does. Too many Crazies getting around, people just need to laugh more!!
Update!!
Rough sanded the body pieces tonight to 180grit. Also the head stock and veneers.
I'll look at gluing up 2 pairs of the body together, leave them overnight, then glue the two pairs together the following day to minimise any shifting of the pieces, instead of trying to manage all four pieces at once. I'll use the press at work to apply some light pressure, I don't want to go overboard!
I'll also look at what we have at work to press the headstock and veneers together. We have some 1" thick pieces of metal plate that could do the job nicely instead if having to use the press. I won't have to worry about excess glue squeeze out either, all of the exterior is going to be shaped in some form or other.

This is going to be either an epic success story of innovation, or a recipe for what not to do!!!

This was a very quick lesson in how much is too much, and how much is not enough glue!!
In my opinion, I may have used way too much on the veneers, and possibly not enough on the body halves!
We will see in the morning!

The force is strong with this one...
Hope the glue isn't forced through the veneer by the pressure and you end up with glue spots. Don't forget to check!
