Yeah a good dust free area is a must. I don't bother polishing it, it doesn't actually cut back very nicely compared to acrylic anyway. If you wet sand it really flat, taking out any orange peel and then do a final 'flow coat' application according to the instructions it flattens out really well and doesn't need polishing IMO.
A bit like a 2 pack application, but with a 2 hour tack time!
Little bit more progress here. I've had some problems on the neck with some dust specks and imperfections I wasn't happy with, hopefully the last coat on this arvo. Gave the body another polish. There are still a couple of tiny scratches here and there, but I'll wait until I've done assembly as I'm bound to add more.
Quick mockup. I have this and another pick guard from PBG. They are slightly different shapes. I bought the second one as the kit one wasn't as nice a fit as I was hoping. Sadly the replacement isn't much better, just a bit wobbly in the cutting and some scratches even through the protective plastic on both.
I am being super picky though. I think I'll just keep refining the kit one, strip everything out and give it a polish to get the scratches out.

That's it, when done right it looks amazing even though it's very simple, but any blemish shows up very easily. Looking good though, I hope you can the finish to a level you're satisfied with, blacked out strat is a great look in my opinion.Quote:

not to shabby your getting better at spraying Sonic nice work mate 👍👍👍
Yes agree on the black. The telecaster I’m finishing in black shows every micro spec of dust!

Damn man that Black finish is great:cool: I too know how hard it is to do a black finish. That my friend is a labor of love
Cheers guys :). I'm pretty happy with it, but it's super nerve wracking to assemble. Lots of dust and fingerprints added today. Only got the neck and bridge on, but I can now get the fit right on the pick guard and decide which one to use.
The replacement one is better, it's thicker and less scratched. But I've noticed that the pots in the kit one are small post with the little tangs to locate in the guard. The replacement one has larger holes for the pots and no locator holes for the tangs.
I think I'll try and make the lower horn a little less pointy and just go with the kit one.

That’s a slick but if gear you’ve built SM, wonderful job!
Cheers Frankie.
I'm calling it done, just a few finger prints to clean off and I have to glue the nut in. I had the same issue with the Shoegazer where the graphtech nut is shorter than the kit nut so needs to be shimmed. Didn't take long to sort out.
It plays really well, but I'll suggest a bridge upgrade at some point in the future. It does the job, but it was a bit of a pain to work with during setup. Also looking at it I probably could have recessed the neck in the pocket 1.5-2mm. It's fine, but something I'd consider trying if I ever build another one of these.
Overall I'm happy with it and I'm sure the new owner will be as well.
This will be my last kit build for a while - I'm going to focus on scratch building something.

Looks great Sonic. Looking forward to seeing what your scratch build will be
That’s a really nice looking guitar!
What a pearler! Great job! GotM?
Wow that looks fantastic, well done!
Very classy build there Sonic.
Thanks guys, appreciate the kind words.
I think the Steampunker will be my last GOTM foray. This one technically breaks the rules as someone is paying me to do it.
Besides, I've won it once and don't have anything to prove, I'd rather see new builders have a crack as it's a lot of fun and informative - even just from the judges feedback.
Yeah I don't plan on stopping building; kits or otherwise and it's fun to share so I'm not going anywhere *groan*
I know that groan. It the sound my better half makes when I say things like:
"I found this really cool online store"
"I could build a really cool XYZ!"
"Check out the grain on this timber I found on my sales trip!"
"Can you believe they've started a brewery there?!"
"No, we don't have to be in the moshpit, but...."
"I can probably get it up to 450rwkW without spending too much more..."
Lol. Yeah mine has given me some serious groans over the last 20 years of stuffing around with cars. She is a lot more supportive of this...which I am enjoying :)
This has turned out really cool. Such a great first guitar. So much better than just a generic beginner model. I’m a big fan of the headstock logo too.
Ps: my wife is the current undisputed groan champion of the world
Hah ha :D
This one is finally in the hands of it's new owner, I did get a video clip as well but it's a bit low quality. He's clearly enjoying himself :)
