Cheers Sonic.
I actually look forward to revising the previous work.
My Squier Tele has already undergone several revisions.
The Epiphone and Squier Bronco are also in a state of flux awaiting a refinish.
The Veneer arrives tomorrow so progress will resume shortly.
cheers, Mark.
Veneer showed up....

File out the holes again
Attachment 28665
Add some colour (good ol' Golden Teak)
Attachment 28666
Whilst applying clear let's test the tuner fit...

cheers, Mark.
Yeah.......this will be finished waaaaaay before mine.
Nice work so far Mark.
Can't see what BassGuy is doing to his kit, not on fbook, but taking a bit off that lower bout does even the shape up a bit.
Out of curiosity, where did you get your veneer from?
Grant
Thanks Grant. After seeing what he did, I had a look at a few pictures of Jazzmasters. Seems like the JM-1 does have a slightly exaggerated offset.
It now sits quite well on the guitar stand if off to one side.
I was in Music Junction day before last and they had a Fender Jazzmaster sitting on a stand in the same position.
Picking it up I got the impression it's going to be a similar weight to mine.
I got the veneer from LuthierSupplies on ebay. Cost me $20 including postage.
I should get at least 3 headstocks worth out of it though.

cheers, Mark.
Progress slowing down.

That’s looking sweet Mark.
Still waiting for hardware to show up so time to mull over what colours to settle on.
Tried out a few from the Molotow swatch.
Attachment 28770
I'm still thinking the Golden Yellow, but still got plenty of considering time.
(edit) Probably not the Vanilla or Menthol as those are the colours of my other guitars.
cheers, Mark.
I quite like the look of the Menthol, but seeing as you already have a guitar in that colour the Golden Yellow would look outstanding. I didn't see the Vanilla option on there
Cadmium yellow or Azure blue both look good.
Sent from my SM-A520F using Tapatalk
Cheers, trv.
'Vanilla' got cut off by Paint inadvertently...
Attachment 28783
Which of course is the colour of my first Pitbull build
Attachment 28784
The Menthol is the darker green I used in my latest Squier Tele repaint.
Attachment 28785
I'll be using it on my Squier Bronco bass...
Attachment 28786
Hi Waz. The Cadmium Yellow was the front-runner until I ran this excersise.
Fortunately I still have plenty of time to mull over which option to go for.
I've run the same excersise over again using a cream pearloid scratch plate,
but I'll spare the casual user another colour overdose.
cheers, Mark.
Oooh, I really like the Wasabi... as you may have noticed I'm partial to greens. But I understand if you want to go in a different direction since you've done green before. I really do think the Golden Yellow would look great though
Yeah, I don't mind the greens. Quite a polarising colour though as some absolutely detest it.
Wasabi has a tad more yellow.
Yellow seems to be a running theme.
I'm also part way through re-painting the Epiphone Junior.
That's going to be....yellow.
Decisions, decisions.
cheers, Mark
I have some hardware finally arrive.
Attachment 28848
As some time has passed, I think it best to finish the neck and get installed to re-measure the scale.
Then I'll set the bridge into position.
cheers, Mark.
Attachment 28864
So the tremolo cavity will require 3 levels of routing.
The heavy shaded area (where the spring mechanism sits) will be about an inch.
The lighter area is where the tremolo arm fits will be about half that.
The rest of the cavity only about a quarter inch.
Attachment 28865
The bridge studs are not open ended.
There are 2 screws that bottom out on the ends to raise/lower each end of the bridge.
The saddles also are individually adjustable up/down and back/forward.
This means the studs will not be removable via my preferred method.
As a work-around I'll drill the first holes to accommodate just the bridge without the studs. and once satisfied that it's sitting correctly, I'll enlarge the holes to fit the studs. (After the body has been finished).
Attachment 28866
cheers, Mark.
rout part 1.
Attachment 28871
Part 2 & 3
Attachment 28872
Hey Presto!
Attachment 28873
Like falling off a log when you edit out all the tears and grief.
cheers, Mark.
One more for perspective.
Attachment 28874
cheers, Mark.
Just when I thought I'd be done for the day...
The rest of the hardware arrives...
Attachment 28875
(edit:) Can't resist a quick mock-up
Attachment 28876
cheers, Mark.
lookin great!:D
Thanks but, quantity doesn't always mean quality. Lots of better builders than me here.
Noice. Very Noice. Clean, smooth and simples.
Yep, and of course everybody has their perspective
Reading me like a book.Quote:
and simples
Like my previous build, I was kind of aiming at something which would come of the Fender production line....
..if they'd be so inclined.
So fairly straight forward and nothing too far out of reach in regards to skill required.
cheers, Mark.
Finished the pointy end
Attachment 28878
cheers, Mark.
Attached the neck.
I have to say that unlike many examples lately, the pre-drilled neck holes lined up well.
Attachment 28879
Now precise scale length has been achieved.
Attachment 28880
cheers, Mark.
I'll probably use the majority of standard JM-1 wiring.
Was going to go with one tone and one volume but may as well use all 3 JM-1's.
You can never have too many knobs (can't remember the quotee).
So I decided I'll have to extend the rout.
Attachment 28900
cheers, Mark.
Wow, lots of work here, this looks great, love the headstock logo
Relentless aint it?
Attachment 28901
Starting to resemble a guitar.
Now glad that I'm using a place-holder scratch plate as attention to knob location is required.
Attachment 28902
cheers, Mark.
Thanks Stan.
It's highly un-original but as the aim is to mimic the real mccoy...
Slightly better focus.Attachment 28903
cheers, Mark.
If you’re willing to use different style knobs you could go with a concentric volume pot, so you can have both volumes stacked.
Thanks for the suggestion WeirdBits.
I'm about to dive into the technical thicket that you probably call 'elementary wiring'.
I'll definitely investigate (stumble through) that avenue.
Although since finally locating the bridge, I'm now tempted to move the bridge pickup rearwards a bit more.
cheers, Mark.
Time to re-deploy the excavator.
Attachment 28912
[edit] Placeholder pickguard take 2
Attachment 28913
cheers, Mark.
Swimming pool extension.
Attachment 28943
First foray into the wiring.
Encumbered with an amateur's level of soldering.
Hampered by dodgy factory wiring.
Several false starts but finally managed to produce a sound.
Attachment 28944
I'm waiting on delivery of a 'Gibson' style 3-way switch but used the kit one in lieu.
cheers, Mark.
As the pickups actually work I'll put all the strings on and check for playability.
Suspend the wiring until the 3-way toggle arrives.
Attachment 28950
cheers, Mark.
Second attempt at MDF scratchplate place-holder.
Bridge pickup moved back.
Bridge may move forward a couple of mm.
Attachment 28956
cheers, Mark.
