Hmmm, plenty of Vox Amp envy happening,
You may remember Muzza who was building 2 PRS styles a couple of years ago and had no end of dramas, main one being not black or dark enough.
Andy seems to be the only forum member to have had any luck with using Black Stump on his double necker.

Well my thinking on it was to do a two tone finish black on the back of the body and neck and the Bushfire Sunrise on the front. Just to confirm an earlier post as well yes my kit has a Maple neck it does actually appear to have some kind of clear finish on it already. A quick look at the website and it says the neck is "Ready to spray" so im not sure what it is maybe some type of sealer or shellac in any case ill probably have to sand it before I attempt any staining.
I managed to get something done yesterday not much but something at least. I've checked the scale length and test fitted the neck and also checked the alignment and test fitted some parts it all looks pretty good so far. Onto the fun of sanding now the front of the body has a few machining marks but the back is pretty good.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...57966959bf.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...da75c57a8e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...9ccf50b13d.jpg
It's just crying out 'gold top' to me.
I have a real hankering for a gold top at the moment. I'm trying to be strong.
It's not particularly easy to get a real 'gold top' look, rather than just using a gold spray. I need to see how they end up doing it in the current Guitar Magazine Greco LP conversion when they get round to the finish stage.
Just a few progress pics to share I've been a little slack keeping this thread updated with the build.
So i decided to skim the front of the body with some ebony timber mate just to see how it would come out.

A bit of sanding later and it started to come up alright.

After all the sanding i cleaned it up and decided to see what some colourless Dingotone would look like on the top
and here is the result after one coat.

It came up better than i expected so ill add a couple more coats and see how it comes up.
Im going to do the back of the body and neck with DT Bushfire Sunrise that i have left over from my previous build.
While i was at it today i also had a crack at re-shaping the headstock.

So im not quite finished with the headstock just yet it still needs a bit of fine tuning but its close to where i want it.
Hey I like the way the top came up!!

The front of the body doesn't look to bad at all, I'd definitely be happy with it.
Looking good.
It's going to be a nice warm day in Melbourne today so i got out in the cave early and got going on some more stain coats. Not looking too bad although staining the back has revealed a few small glue spots around the binding that i missed which is a pain i thought I had taken care of them all. I'll post some more pictures once the body is more easily handled.

I really like the top!
Tones match really well !!

Agreed, that finish on the top is really nice. The rest looks good too, but thats a stand out.
That is some aesthetically pleasing wood finishing you have there.
More stain coats applied this arvo its looking good so far.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...4a6bf910b0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0c76972cad.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...8b67d4ece7.jpg
Man, that's looking great.
Yeah it's come up better than i expected my only problem is the back of the body took up a lot more stain than i thought it would and i may not have enough to finish the neck.
Somehow I don't think the cream colour pup surrounds are going to look right. The pick guard and back covers are the same as well so ill have to look at something different. The volume and tone knobs will probably look weird too.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d0b4620f4a.jpg
You could try seeing if the rings will stain a bit by soaking in strong cold tea (no milk or sugar). The standard Chinese kit plastics are a bit light/yellow in colour and could do with being darker and more creamy looking. The back of the guitar would go well with either cream or black, but I'm not sure whether I'd go with black rings. Cream rings and amber knobs would be my own choice, but it's your guitar.

The Paul Kossof stripped top LP looks like it had almost white rings (though that could be the photo)

And Marc Bolan's originally black LP Custom was partially stripped, and then refinished in a general amber varnish. The neck was left original, so it ended up with a black neck, black control covers and cream pup surrounds.

I do like the white the knobs i have are very similar in colour as well thanks Simon
I reckon the guitar will look great with black pickup rings, I love the contrast between the colour of the stain used on the back and the natural wood colour on the front, quite pleasing.
Hi Grubsta, looking good.
If mine, I would stick with the cream plastic bits that came with the kit as they are similar warm tones that should compliment stain colours and feel black may be too stark. Soaking in tea or coffee would darken them up a bit if that is what you prefer.
With DT stain running low best to make a start on the neck and if you run out maybe double up with extra intensifier coats. From memory it looks like a maple neck so that will probably need several more coats to dial in a similar colour to the body. Intensifier can add some colour, just not as much as the base stain.
Cheers, Waz
I've got a bit to think about here thanks for the advice guys very much appreciated.
I have enough base stain to maybe squeeze 2 neck coats if i'm lucky so ill see how it goes. Yes indeed it is a maple neck i was hoping to make a start on it tomorrow.
I need to finish shaping the head stock as well.
And we have glue lines bugger. They didn't show in the initial coats but now they stand out like a pimple on a nose.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...4d52cf989f.jpg
Gold pinstripes?
Or possibly pinstripes to match the binding?
I don't know how well it would work on the Dingotone (works OK with Tru-Oil), but I've been using coloured Sharpie pens to touch up the odd light spot on my ES-1/330 build. Find the nearest matching colour, draw on the finish and then smudge with a finger. Of course it will need some more clear over the top to protect it. I sometimes use two colours for a better match.
If it doesn't look right, a quick rub with turps or metho should remove the ink.
And I now always treat any wood or veneer join as a probably glue line, so it's always worth going over the joins with a glue remover and a brush before you do anything else.
Thanks for the advice Simon ill have a play around and see how i go. Lesson learned here. When I started staining the top there were no signs of glue at all I think i put a little too much faith in the joins.
So I needed to try and get inspired about the plastics that came with the kit. I decided to set some parts out and see how it might look. I was actually surprised by it. The colorless stain on the top has settled and its darkened quite a bit.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...42b2aae40b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...48ebfc7ba0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7e67771540.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d1dd0df7d2.jpg
I think the cream and gold knobs work quite well. It's pretty standard on Lp guitars. Once it's all on it works well with the binding. Shame about the glue lines, some pinstripes is not a bad idea.
