This is cool. I can't wait to see how that headstock looks when it's sanded and veneered!

Trial and error
Hopefully more trail than error. Looks pretty good so far.
Beginning to appreciate the skill of the luthier/musical instrument maker
They all had to start somewhere.
All blue. A lot harder than I thought and not perfect like how I imagined it but it’s my first scratch build so I’m letting myself of a little

Might need to give it another coat if you want to even out the shade of blue and add a bit more on the lightest parts.
What do you intend to use for the top coat? Something clear will retain the blue shade whereas oils may add a greenish tinge.
Actually pretty happy with the colour and shading. As for the final sealing/top coats I’m not sure. Because it’s oil paint I might go with an initial seal with a spray on poly then loads of wipe on poly.
Sounds like a good plan.
I really like it. Headstock mods are pretty impressive.
It’s like watching paint dry, literally.

DAMn! That is gonna look amazing!
Slight concern: the Rick bass pickup height and the shimmed neck height. Will the pickup have to be surface mounted like a 6-string 330 or 360?
Also, neck doesn’t want to go into pocket anymore.
Looks sexy, nice colour
After staining the neck on my rca-4 also no longer fit.
It turned out to be because wood absorbed so much liquid and became swollen from the water based stain I used. I don't remember how long it took, but it seemed like a very long time. But eventually the wood dried and the pieces fit again.
This looks unreal. As Rook said, give it a good chance to dry out and the neck should fit again. Not sure regarding your pickup question. I wold put it together and see how if goes first.
Basses are fine, I prefer guitars....But I just love Rick basses and yours looks like another stellar build in the making.
When setting the neck, I should replace the bridge, clamp the neck in, install two machineheads, strings, scratch plate and pickups for alignment etc. But, should I glue at the same time, or do I remove the neck again and glue without the strings on.
Or do all that without glue to make sure then do it all again with glue. Just answered my own question, I think.
Don’t think I need a shim. Bridge about 2/3 of way up, string just about rings enough to set intonation. Am I missing something?

Well, it’s together and nothing can put it asunder, now. Otherwise it’s a new kit and start again.
With old friend for company.

Thinking of putting a plate a la Fender at the neck heel, there’s not a lot of wood to wood contact and the bottom of the neck pocket is pretty thin. Anyone else done this or is it not a problem?
It works and it goes “CLANG” like a Rick!

Nice work cleaning up that binding
Thanks, Andy, just don’t look too closely.
Nice. I like my RCA4 and the sound great. Still struggling with the action on mine as the neck angle was a bit too flat. Considering routing the body and dropping the bridge into the body a little to fix it...
Live with the little imperfections or keep going with the wipe on poly and green scotch pad?

As it's quite thin, a standard plate would only weaken it further (because of the screw holes). You'd need an oversized plate that was a fair bit wider than the heel dimensions, so that it would spread the load to the thicker parts of the body to the sides of the neck joint.
I'd live with the imperfections in the finish for now, add a few more layers, then leave it to dry and cure for a few weeks. You should then be able to sand it down flat and polish it up. Don't try and sand it too soon, because the finish really won't be hard enough.
Cheers, Simon
Finished and playable, just a few little set up tweaks to go.https://i.imgur.com/WcFa4Ub.jpg
