Attachment 24491 a coat of t/0 on the back and sides
Thats looking real nice.... I'm trying to work out how you have it hanging there lol.... looks like its precariously balanced on a dolls house chimney...
Attachment 24494its a clothes hanger
I was beginning to think you did a bit of this in your spare timeAttachment 24495
After thinking I'd completely stuffed it up, a couple of costs of t/o and its actually where i was trying to get to, im feeling a lot better about it now on friday i didnt know if it was savable.Attachment 24507Attachment 24508Attachment 24509Attachment 24510Attachment 24511
Coming along. It's amazing how clears (regardless of what you use) really lift the finish.
Attachment 24524Attachment 24525 a couple of coats of oil and i cut out the pickup rings, couldn'tresist a mock build
Woo! Looks great. That pickguard really sets it off
Nice one dude! Just caught up with this build looks excellent. I was playing a white 12 string danelectro in the shop which looked a lot like this, and if there is a kit one available maybe I will build one instead of building a 12 string thinline. The back of yours especially looks really beautiful. Am loving this mahogany
There is indeed a 12 string version, I'm about to start staining mine after the hot weather passes
So after deliberating for weeks on a pickup upgrade I've decided to stick with the kit ones and see what happens. Did a multimeter test and the bridge is at 8.87 and the neck is 8.63, i now that the mini humbuckers are usually like that, if i was after a different tone for the neck what would using a 250 k pot do, or am i barking up the wrong tree

Up to 5 coats of t/o and a water slide decal, starting to get a bit of shine about it
250K pots would make the output generally duller. 1 Meg would add a bit more brightness than 500k.
So i ran out of t/o tonight bummer still need a few more coats, guess I'll have to add a new kit to the order to save on shipping ;)
Attachment 24710 last of the t/o on its getting there
Attachment 24769 while waiting for some more t/o to arive i decided to straighten the neck and top the frets, after seeing 1 pr 2 have issues with the composite wood pulling up with the tape i put some dingo wax on first and buffed it up before taping, it all worked a treat. I must say i wasn't really liking the feel of the plastic wood but after putting on the dingo wax it really came up nice and smooth and feels a lot nicer too touch
Attachment 24819 glued the neck in this arvo, probably shouldn't have the body still needs a couple of coats of oil and a buff, but i wanted to finish coat it all togather
Attachment 24820 with the neck set i couldn't resist a mock build, the roller bridge also turned up, i really like the feel of them in the grs and es1tl so thought id use one here as well. Ive dacided to use 2 volomes one for each pickup and no tone using a 250 pot for the neck and a 500 pot for the bridge, i can add a master tone later if needed.
I'm really liking how its starting to look
Attachment 24890Attachment 24891Attachment 24892 i was able to spend most of the weekend working on guitars and making beer, managed to get 5 coats on over the last few days and is starting to flatten out and get a bit of shine to it
Attachment 24908gave it a wet sang with 1200 grit and another coat of 50/50 t/o , starting to get nice and shiny
Attachment 24964been 2 coating with 50/50 mix and wet sanding in between each day this week and it was nice and shiny but not getting flat, but id forgotten one inportant step, to wet sand with t/o 50/50 mix. Its nice and flat now and 2 thin coats to go till a buff and polish
This is looking great Adam.
A really unique take on a classic guitar style.
Yeah, it's looking really good
Attachment 25027 polished up and a few bits fitted still need to do the wiring and fit the nut but getting close
Attachment 25045Attachment 25046Attachment 25047
Put some string on tonight and the truss rod cover. Its looking pretty snazzy, i havent done any of the wiring yet that will happen over the weekend. I havent been able to get the top nice and flat its very shiny but each coat keeps leaving lines in it. I suspect its because of the high humidity and temps the t/o is going tacky as i wipe it on, done somewhere between 20 and30 coats with wetsands every 5 or 6 coats. The back and pick guard are fine its only the top maybe the black shows more faults. But going to finish it of and wait a month or 2 then give another wet sand and recoat

Oh man. I want one like that.

All wired up, just need a good set of strings put on tomorrow night and a final polish up. Wiring ive done the neck pickup 250k vol pot with 500k tone pot and cap is what came with the kit. Bridge pickup 500k vol only.
Sounds ok through the yamaha thr, but only my grs sounds good thruigh it, will give it run through the marshal amp tomorrow arvo and see how it sounds. Only upgrade are the bridge nut and 250k vol pot, the rest is all stock kit
Attachment 25186 restring tonight and glue the nut in couldn't resist a comparison photo with an LP this guitar is tiny but suprisingly sounds really good with the stock pickups i cant really fault it. The band has got its first gig in 12 months tomorrow night so all 4 pitbull builds are going to get a few wacks with a pick. I must say im not a fan of the fake wood fretboard it doesn't affect the neck or the playability it just doesnt feel as nice as real timber
Top job Barnsley, I love that timber look, good luck with gig mate.
I've been sanding my Blackwood fingerboards nice and smooth. Makes it feel more like ebony.
Attachment 25633 not good the action is way to hight and the neck is flexing will playing
Heavens! Does that mean the glued heel joint is coming away?
Seems to be i can move the neck and see it moving
Hmm, I wonder the best way to fix that. Might you have got some finish on the neck pocket, causing it to not adhere correctly? Can you get it out without damaging it?
I guess ive got to try and get it of with out any damage ive heard a knife heated with steam might work.
Open to sugestions and some help
Titebond? Heat should do it. You can try heating a pallet knife on a hot iron and slipping it in down the sides and underneath, a bit at a time, but if the sides are too tight to get one in, then steaming over a pad of boiling water should do it. The steam is just a method of getting heat to the glue. I'd tape off as much of the finish as you can around the joint.
I'd suggest using two clamps next time, one for the tongue and one for the end of the neck. Remove as much of the old glue as you can. There's not a huge amount of neck/body contact area on those kits, so every bit needs to be a good tight fit. If there's any looseness on the sides of the pocket, then I'd stick some veneer on one side to make it tighter.
With the neck off, it might be worth getting some carbon paper, sticking it at the bottom of the pocket, then clamping it tight. Points of contact will leave a mark, points not contacting won't. You should have a mark all over the base of the neck, but if it's patchy, then you can try sanding down the high areas (the ones with carbon print on), and repeat until you get a nice even contact area all over the bottom of the neck.
