hey guys i have a little issue, i think my bridge isnt right. the small bits that you can adjust the intotaion (hope i said that right) i think they are around the wrong way. dont the bigger grooves hold the thicker strings? or am i incorrect. i have attached photos to help what i mean.

Hey Brokin, yes the wider grooves are for the wound strings. You will still be able to access the saddle intonation screws from the bridge pup side all good.
You may have to raise the bridge height a little to access them. Start with the saddles around the centre of adjustment.
A tip it's easier to remove the clear plastic on the pickguard if you remove the pots, switch and mounting screws first
-
thanks again wokkaboy. just thinking can i swap them around so i can adjust them from the outside? or is that not recommended?
-
sure Brokin you can reverse the saddles. Keep the saddles in the same order if the grooves are wider for the low E string and narrower for the high E string. It will make the saddle adjustments easier.
I just had another look at the pic, the saddle heights are higher for D and G strings so keep the saddles in the same order. This is to keep the string heights similar to the fingerboard radius
-
no worries Brokin that's what we are here for - to help. Keep the saddle orientation the same as well

looks good Brokin. So you up to the wiring stage ? have you decided for 2 volumes or 2 tones ?
-
1 Attachment(s)
hey wokkaboy, wiring already done. 1 volume 2 tones. Attachment 20170
im pretty much ready to string it up and set it up and if all is good hoepfully have it playing.
one question i just remembered. they mentioned the guitar needs time to settle itself in, roughly how hong does it take to settle it in?
-
good work Brokin. Will probably take a few days to settle in. Too many variables to list like humidity, string tunings etc. Best thing to do is play the guitar as much as you can and the neck will settle in quicker. Then you should be able to do the final setup and intonation. If you are using the supplied plastic nut the slots tend to be high.
-
Good job indeed Brokin. Your story reminds me to check the saddles on my bridge ;)

thanks again guys for all your help with the build i definately couldnt of done it without you legends helping out. i just tested it and im extremely happy as one it works haha and 2 it actually sounds pretty good. maybe later I'll upgrade the pickups but for now im very happy.

bravo brokin, you gotta be happy with that!
-
good stuff Brokin looks great. If there is some nice flame maple under the pickguard between the 2 pups I would trim the pickguard. That's what I did on mine
-
-
thanks guys. it came up well very happy with my first build. definately have the bug for it now. i have to save me dollars so i can get another one. alot of fun.
one thing i wanted ask. i use the guitar with distortion of course and im having a feed back issue through the amp full tube amp. my other guitar (PRS se) doesnt have this issue when using the same set up on the amp. i have read into it and the comments are turn down the volume or distortion but when i turn it down enough to stop the feeback i loose the grunt. i noticed there is a capacitor resistor upgrade which may help. https://www.pitbullguitars.com/shop/...elity-upgrade/
but not sure. any advice guys? would a pickup upgrade help as im only using the standard ones in the kit.
-
Hey Brokin, I'd say new pickups that are wax potted will help your feedback issues. How far are the pickups to the strings ? If they are too far (like more than 3mm) you are probably turning up the amp to compensate the volume.
Some forumites have wax potted their PBG pickups and it has reduced the feedback. Best solution would be to save up for some better quality pickups
-
thanks again wokkaboy. i was looking at the tonerider rocksong pickups. has anyone tried them before?
-
yes I've tried rocksongs on 2 builds I think and I thoroughly recommend them. Nice clean tones to crisp overdriven sounds
-
nice. sounds like the ones to get. one more question hll. have you tried the Tonerider Octane Alnico 8 Bridge Humbucker – Black
-
Hi Brokin, no I haven't but am keen to try, they sound super hot. Zeromick on the forum did a demo, have a search for that in a 1 pickup strat build.
-
I didn't even have to flick back a page to know you are talking about the Octane!
-
hey guys im tossing up between the entwistle dark star or the tonerider Octane Alnico. not sure which one to choose. anyone know if they are anygood?
-
went with the dark star pickups and also bought some 500k tone pots. the 250k pots dont do much when you adjust them.
i chose the dark star as i want to tune this guitar at c. so i thought they would suit better.
i did a quick swap of the pickups last night (grab the prs se pick ups) and wow a huge difference. now i know next time i will be buying upgraded pickups for sure.
-
I have the Dark Stars in my GD-1 they do sound nice.
-
hey Brokin I've put dark stars in an explorer and they sound great.
-
Bit late catching up with this thread and love what you have done. Very sexy in an all natural finish.
Understand why you may have gone with Entwistles as they are cheaper and I did the same on my Son's guitar and they sound OK but if your budget can stretch to the price of a set of Toneriders they have more tonal varieties to pick from and most sound awesome.
Cheers, Waz
-
thanks guys, yeah im going to get the tonerider rocksongs for my prs next which should be good. the standard prs se pickups sound good in the flying v at the moment, i cant wait until i put the dark star in it. i got the 500k tone pots also to help with the tone as the 250k ones dont do much.
-
Great job Brokin.. I love that nice clean woodgrain and gold hardware.. awesome job...
-
Hey guys, I'm super excited i got the dark star pickups. one thing the pickups come with 5 wires coming out of them not the usual 2. any tips or help on how i wire these babies up?
My setup is just the 2 humbuckers with 1 volume and 2 tones. as per dedmans wiring diagram he sent earlier on this thread.
thanks again guys.
-
Hey Brokin, is there any paperwork on wire colours ? There should be 4 wires plus a bare earth wire. Since you won't be splitting the humbuckers 2 wires will be joined and insulated to connect the north and south pups of the humbucker. Then there will be a hot wire and earth wire which you will pair the bare earth wire to the insulated earth wire. I'll have a quick search for Darkstar wire colours. Maybe if you can please post a photo of the wires from the pups
-

Hey Brokin see if the wire colours are as the diagram. Red and white will be joined and insulated. Black will be the hot wire and green and the bare wire paired will be the earth (if the colours are the same on your pups)
-
Hey Wokkaboy, yeah i worked it out. i sort of had a little panic as i honestly don't fully understand everything on a guitar just yet, but once i sat down and looked into it. Light bulb haha.
All good now, these pick ups are awesome perfect for what i need, i honestly can't believe how good they sound. definitely worth getting.
-
wow that was a quick install Brokin. Bet it brings life into the Flying V !

Hey FrankenWashie, as per your request a link to a video of the beast. sorry not the best quality sound as i used my phone and I'm not the best guitarist. hopefully you enjoy. 😊
the tuning is drop c.

sounds good Brokin, got a nice clean and dirty tone
-
thanks wokkaboy. i dont know if was lucky but this guitar looks and sounds awesome.
-
haha no luck involved, you took your time and listened to advice on the forum. When I started building kits it was learn the hard way with mistakes there was probably 20 people on the forum
-
Well done. Looks and sounds great.
