Nice one Oli. Is this stained with FW mahogany? I used same stain on a previous LP Jnr build and it came up real nice with Tru Oil finish. Not Manly colours at all lol

Hi Andrew. Yes FW MAHOGANY
I've put on two more coats now.
Tomorrow I'm going to mix some FW Japan black in.
Will post more after it dries. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...88fca3a9c7.jpg

Looks awsome oli
Sanded it down a little with 320 and mixed in the FW Japan black.
I'm quite happy with this colour. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...54d81a2a49.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...564466e1ae.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7731bb1722.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c70d4ad43c.jpg

Oh man.
After getting the colour right on te back I peeled off the sticky tape and what was protecting the front of the guitar only to find that there was a bad fold in the tape and some colour had bled onto the top.
Major bummer. It was about 5mm round.
I attacked it with Goof Off but no joy there.
So ..... refusing to be beaten I covered the whole top with a light coat of Japan black.
Figuring that it will look nice once all oiled up and shiny.
If this fails I will end up "saving" it with black rattle cans[emoji1][emoji1]
Here is what it looks like now.

I went crazy with the Goof Off on the veneer but there are still glue marks (smears)
Noticeably at the bottom of the face and along the seam down the centre of the guitar face.
Help please......
Q. Any ideas how to get rid of that guys??

Small scalpel or similar sharp device used along glue line to make a slight indentation to allow you to back fill with timber mate that has been diluted down in the same stain colour. Needs to be very, very thinly applied so that there isn't much sanding required once dry.
Binding blues. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...8320a24d6c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...1e39a4ae0c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...d8f3d55d3a.jpg
These fine cracks have shown up after getting stain on the binding.
Oh well......... a vintage / aged look perhaps??[emoji53]
Anyway the rest of the guitar is shaping up well.
Some fine sanding before the final coats of Tung oil and FW buffing finish.

A few tricks I have used to clean up bindings:
1. Wipe over the binding with some metho on a rag. It gets rid of a lot of the colour but some scraping may be required.
2. I recently found that micro mesh pads are great for cleaning up bindings. I star with a middle range grade then finish off with something finer.
Hope it helps.
Well. After about 10 coats of Tung oil and plenty of time to dry between coats tomorrow I’ll start the wet sanding with Tung oil and use 1200 grit. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7a600c446f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f715c32705.jpg
I really hope to get some nice depth to the top of this.
Got a good feeling.........

Quick question mate. Are you using polymerized Tung Oil?
Here’s a shot of the tin.

Lots of coats. Lots of wet sanding then I finish off with this tin .....

I think the finish is just great!

I hope that this will give you the finish you're after. If you only would use non-polymerized tungoil you wouldn't have any gloss...

All the best stuff from stewmac over here man...[emoji1]

Hah.. and I'm worried about dust in my workshop!
Thats going to be a nice looking guitar.
Hi groovy dudes.
I’m back on this after a long break.
Neck finish is all completed.
Still going on the front and back of the body (I dropped it and the back is scratched...doh!!)

Oh bro, I am liking how that’s turning out.
Looking good man
Looks great Oli. Love the shine on back of the neck.
Hi Oli, finish is looking super nice.
For my own education would you outline how you have achieved this?
10 coats of Tung oil.
Followed by wet sanding with Tung oil (how many times?).
Coating with buffing oil?
Respect,
Mark.
Looking really nice *Adds yet another kit to the to-do list*
ok. after all of the sanding down I start with a few coats of tung oil in fairly quick succession as the first few soak in fast. (These are applied with an old cotton t-shirt cut into small squares) Say one coat then an hour wait then another coat then another hour wait then another coat (rubbing down with a cloth between each coat)
then I wait a few days letting it air in a shady spot. Subsequent coats are left for two days between each up to about 10 in total.
Then I do the wet sanding - 1200 grit - with a day drying between each (longer if the weather isnt great - if it is raining and cool i may wait a week). I'll do about 4 of these. To be sure that it is flat and has no stroke marks i just keep going till it is really smooth.
Note that the tung oil that I use doesnt give a shiny finish. It really comes up when I put on the fine buffing oil.
Now that I've finished the first lot of tung oil coats and left it for ages till it is truely dry all the way through I commence the fine buffing oil.
this goes on fairly similarly to the tung oil - cotton tshirt cut into little squares, dipped in the buffing oil and rubbed over the first coats of tung oil. Big difference is that this stuff seems to become tacky faster so application is swift and quite thin - not thick at all.
wait two days between each application - my neck has 4 coats of fine buffing oil - I intend to do double that on the body.
Note - no wet sanding with the fine buffing oil. just very thin coats
hope that helps!
Thank you for your oiling method. I gather from reading the Tru Oil Thread in Finishing Your Guitar that wet sanding uses water with a drop of detergent followed by wiping down with a clean cloth. I’m liking the results people are getting with the oils and I’m favouring this approach to finish mine. Thanks again.
As a first-time user of it, I'm finding Tru-Oil easy to use. It's not as quick or immediate as spraying, but I can't do that for at least another 2-3 months when the weather warms up, so it means I can build a guitar in the winter. I probably should have used at least two coats of the Tru-Oil sealer, as I've spent a bit of time just adding layers to fill-in sinkage into the grain, but with a veneer top, you don't want to spend too much time sanding the sealer back to a flat finish. But I'll do at least two coats of that when I get to putting the finish on the ESB-4 (once I've routed the pickup cavities).
The first few coats of Tru-Oil will take up some stain from the body, so beware runs down the sides and onto the back with those coats. Mask up if necessary especially if you've got different top and side colours. I ended up scraping coloured Tru-Oil marks off the bindings a couple of times.
I had a great afternoon with the guitar today.
Heaps of polishing and wiring and stringing.
Just sooooooper fun.
Here are some photos.
Lots more work to do though.

I’m super stoked with this build.

So nice to watch someone really enjoy the guitar !!

Very nice oli
Looks great. Might need a haircut with all those long string ends hanging off the headstock!
Surprised with the weight? How does that compare with the Tele Custom?
Cheers, Waz
It's not that heavy, certainly lighter than a normal Tele, Strat or Les Paul. That solid centre block provides most of the weight in the body.
those little vox amp plugs are pretty good, I use mine for testing wiring too
